Bigger oil filter better?

I’ve been all through this site looking at oil filter posts. It appears that OEM Toyota filters are longer than most aftermarket filters. I have seen people using all the way up to a PH8A Fram filter, which is huge compared to stock. My question is, does size matter? I came across a great deal on some filters that are the same diameter, but nearly double the length. Will they work on our 4.0 engines?


I can get them for $3 each.

 

You can never go wrong using the stock Toyota oil filter. Motor was engineered for that filter. $5. Win.

 

And you can't go wrong with the stock tires, stock motor oil, stock wipers, etc... And an engine engineered for an oil filter?

Yes, generally speaking, bigger oil filter is better. I'm running Purolator PL30001 (equivalent in size to the Fram PH8A). It's the largest practical filter you can fit on the V6 Tacos with spin-on filters.

Bigger isn't always better, brand, or rather construction materials, design and filter quality are more important than size.

That said I run

$14 WIX 51515xp XP Oil Filter

WIX 51515xp on my truck. It adds about 3/4 more quart capacity and in theory helps preserve engine oil life by keeping oil temps lower due to capacity and surface area of the filter body.

I would only run wix, napa gold, Mobil1, K&N and royal purple filters on my vehicle, WIX seem to be the best bang for the buck. I do full synthetic Mobil1 oil at 7-10k intervals, waiting on an oil sample results from blackstone with my 2010 now, but I had good results doing this with my 00 and expect nothing less.

I typically run 5 quarts 10w30 extended performance mobil1 and 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. With a new 51515xp filter every 10k miles, 7k if I've been in the dirt often.

As for the stock toyota filters, their manufacturers change on occasion, I used to work a parts desk at a Toyota dealer and sometimes the filters we got were good, made in Japan and good components well constructed, sometimes the filters we got were crap, made in Taiwan or China, all had the same part number and outwards labeling, minus country of origin printing obviously.

 

What benefit do you get by overfilling the engine by .5 quart?

 

The filter has the anti drainback valve and therefore the additional oil is retained and maintained in the oil filter body not the sump, the engine is not overfilled the oil system is simply expanded to accommodate the larger capacity. Like when you add an oil cooler to a transmission, you don't leave the cooler and new lines empty do you? Your trans would be about 3qts low!!! You need to fill the added volume.

Were I to simply over fill the oil level in the sump it would be devastating as an over filled sump could lead to whipping and frothing of the oil from the rotating assembly creating bubbles that would retain heat and disrupt flow and pressure of oil getting to vital components.

By increasing capacity I increase OCI simply by adding more detergents and lubricitive properties via volume. Also by thermal dynamics a higher volume will heat slower and greater surface area leads to more efficient cooling again extending life by reducing breakdown of the oil molecules.

As my system sits now my oil level is only at the 1/2 way mark on the dipstick, I could add more but for ease of maintenance I stick to what I got, a 5 quart jug and 1 quart of MMO gets me to where I'm happy and my engine is happy as a result.

Also please don't use fram filters they are junk. To answer your question directly so long as the O-Ring and Thread pattern are the same and physical clearance isn't an issue you can run whatever filter you want provided you add or subtract oil volume as necessary.

 

I get what you are saying and not trolling but even a larger oil filter isn’t larger by .5 quart. That would be a massive oil filter. Ultimately it’s your truck whether or not I agree with your reasoning but I was just curious if I’m missing out on something.

51515xp wix, it is massive, I determined the volume by slowly pouring my 1 quart of MMO into and allowing it to permeate the filter pleats before pouring more in, after an hour of topping off it off and letting it sit for 20mins I finally determined it was "full" it used just a hair shy of a full 3/4 a quart of the MMO.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me but like you said it's my truck and it makes me feel better if nothing else so I keep doing it. I say do what makes you feel happy on your truck.

Not trying to saw anyone or be a deeck just sharing my experience opinion and thoughts on the matter.

Applications include 60-70's Ford F100 V8's and the FJZ80 Land Cruiser.

It was the biggest filter I could find at my LAS that still had the right size O ring and 3/4 16 thread.

 

Simple math given the rough dimensions of external case of the filter being 4" diameter and 5.5" tall gives an internal volume of roughly 70"^3 or 1.212 quarts (thank you google) subtract the thickness of the cylinder walls and the space occupied by the spring anti-drainback valve and filter media itself and you get a rough 3/4 quarts of void left over to be filled.

 

Size always matters. Haven't any of your girlfriends told you that? The real question is girth or length?

I run the larger option that Amsoil offers for the 4.0L in the 2nd Gen. I've always run a larger element if available. There are many benefits to this including better filtration and a tad more oil capacity, but that is really negligible.

 

You cannot assume that just because a filter is larger that it will provide superior filtering.

In fact larger filters impact oil pressure which impact filtering abilities.

Buy an oil filter designed for the use/OCI you are looking to get.

That's where I'm at. Larger exhaust, better flow, more power, right? Nope. There's other dynamics involved which I'm not smart enough to discuss.

 

Run engine till operating temperatures are reached shut of engine and let sit for 15mins, pull dipstick, wipe oil on stick between clean fingers, use residual oil to lubricate stick o-ring, return dipstick to tube, pull it again, read level, return to tube.
