So I got the pop & lock 8521 and am in the middle of installing it.
I have everything in and I tapped into the blue/pink and blue/white wires as directed.
The lock will only lock and not unlock, so if I reverse the wires it will unlock but not lock.
Are both wires supposed to be powered to the unit? Does it ground it's self?
I read this on Amazon . My truck is an 05 to.

These are the wires I tapped into in the kick panel. ( camera makes them look a little differebt)

I installed mine in the passengers kick panel, and tapped into blue/black and blue/red.

I also ran into another issue with mine where the lock wasn’t secure enough to actually lock the tailgate. Because it is only mounted with one bolt on a flimsy bracket, if you pulled on the tailgate handle with any force then the tailgate would still open. If you end up the same way, I highly recommend this bracket.

After installing the bracket, my lock works just as it should and is very secure.

Also, here is a thread about the bracket with a very good write up on the whole install.

Yea I noticed it was flimsy. I will tackle that when I get it working.
different years have different colors and I'm using the ones it says to use. What I'm wondering if the 2 wires going to the unit is one for power and one for ground ? Or is one to lock and one to unlock and it ground's itself on the body somehow.?
Because I only have power to one wire

It should be one for lock, one for unlock. That’s why you can just reverse them if it is installed backwards the first time like they say in the instructions.

Sounds like the wire you tapped for the unlock was wrong.

Are you hitting the key fob twice to unlock the passenger side and the tailgate?

The wires put power to 1 and ground the other. Then reverse that polarity for the other way.

Ok I figured the damn thing out . So it's the blue and white wire and a blue and black wire like that guy on Amazon said . So they have the wrong wire in there instructions
