Mike Sweers telling us that Atkinson cycle kills torque, (but we make up for it with gearing..)

It is not the 3.5 but the whole Atkinson cycle.

Thats why its not a full time atkins cycle and switches to conventional when you push your foot down and is now coupled to a six speed transmission. This truck moves when you put your foot into it. Stop expecting v8/full size truck performance from a midsize. It has nearly identical torque as the second gen, yes slightly higher in the rev range but not not significantly, and we have more power overall. Look back at the first gen or the ford ranger and we're miles ahead of them in engine specs now and we are better than older full size trucks too.

Curious- is it a modified Atkinson Cycle using changing of the intake valve timing to lessen compression or one that changes the amount of piston movement between compression and expansion cycles? The concepts between Atkinson and Otto cycle engines, and how Toyota’s are injected and self-cleaning are interesting, thanks for posting the video!

it adjusts valve timing. Keeps the intake valve open for a shot period during the compression cycle. Overall stroke length doesn't change.

I get a high from running FAST motors. This man speaks the truth. I finally arrived at 1,000 miles yesterday and gave it some juice. Digging the 3.5 over the past three 4.0's by a country mile.

That was kind of the point is the Atkinson kills torque down low and needs RPM pedal to get moving.

Nah, I just expected performance on par with my Wife’s 2012 V6 Highlander but I can’t even get that out of it.

That good old iron block with forged internals. Forged. Just like the samurai swords that forged American freedom across Japan. They added an extra vvti because one wasn’t enough. Just sprinkle a little more of that vvti across the top. There you go baby. Vvti GRAVY bitches. The one true thing that hasn’t been sweers-fucked. Atkinson was a vegan, and Otto done stomped a mudhole all up in this shit wearing a bandoleer of baby back ribs. It has ONE cycle. It doesn’t flip flop for the environment. There’s no CHOICE for this engine. That’s 95mm bore and 95 mm STROKE of pure hummingbird hatred running at full sprint. 4 pissed off barrels of non neutered power coming at you on behalf of Japan’s finest engineers. It doesn’t think. It doesn’t wonder if you need more power to pass an Elantra. It doesn’t consider the ecological ramifications of what it’s doing. It doesn’t mind winding out at crack head speeds because there’s no weird ass running parameters the ecu has to baby sit. It just does what it’s told when it’s told. 163 horsepower. Laughable right? WRONG. You know what else was 163 horsepower? Matt fucking Hughes. Small compared to the rest, but no doubt the hardest working and most influential. The legend. You doubt this engine? Go say that shit to Matt Hughes face and see what happens.
