2010 Tacoma 4 liter with 230,000 miles. Just purchased about 3 weeks ago and have the infamous shudder from 2nd-3rd and 3rd to 4th (30 - 40 mph). I've read a lot of info concerning this problem but have a question. My scenario: Doesn't occur until tranny fluid is up to temp, only happens when in over drive (5th), only occurs during normal acceleration. As soon as shudder is felt I can shift to 4th and shudder immediately goes away. If I pull out in 4th gear and leave it in 4th till about 40 mph..No shudder. Any thought's??

Extremely common on that transmission with the 4Runner crowd. Some say a full fluid replacement helps. Others say that certain additives help. I had it on my 4Runner and put in a tube of Shudder Fix (or whatever it's called) and it completely cured it. I recently did a complete fluid change per an excellent write up on this forum, and it's back ever so slightly. I plan to put another tube of that stuff in. The consensus among the 4Runner guys is that it's the lockup in the converter causing the problem, which makes sense because it goes away when you shift into 4th.

Edit - just reread your post, and it's not happening in 5th, correct? If that's the case, I haven't heard of that before.

I did a pan drain and new filter about a week ago. Added Lubeguard shudder fix and checked level per Toyota procedure. Didn’t help the issue. The truck does have 230,000 miles on it but I have no history as to any transmission work. I did the brake test several times and it didn’t really feel like the shudder stopped. Had it to Toyota and they of course recommended Reman tranny at the tune of $5000. Obviously I’m not a tranny guru but why does this shudder only occur when shifter is in overdrive and has no shudder when shifter is in 4th?

No history on the truck ?
you dont know if the truck was shuddering for the other owner ?
Type in your VIN # and see what,s been done to your truck at the dealership
    http://www.toyota.com/owners/web/pages/home

You only have sooo much time to catch the problem . If you continue to drive the truck , you cook the converter clutch .
With this said , and you are certain you have a converter shudder , try a new SLU solenoid with the addition of an aftermarket shift kit.
    Did you stall test ?

A toyota dealership is the wrong place to take a truck out of warranty for transmission diagnostics .
They do not fix transmissions . They only replace with new

I’m the third owner and bought off Craigslist. 2nd owner only owned for two months and claimed no shudder issues. Shudder started for me about two days after purchase. Car fax shows only regular maintenance and that’s it. I did call dealership for information and took in for recalls (nothing to do with tranny). That is when they diagnosed and recommend reman. Did not try stall test. Will do that tomorrow.

I do have a couple of reputable tranny shops local and plan to call them for recommendations. Hopefully they will be familiar with this issue and point me in the right direction. Any recommendations on reman vs. rebuild?

Are you considering having the transmission rebuilt for the shudder issue ?
Thinking the Toyota dealership possibly scared you into thinking the trans is beyond repair ?
There are many fixes for your problem that can still be attempted but a proper diagnostic is what needs to be performed next

I have read thru most of your threads and links. I agree my next move is a diagnosis from reputable shop and go from there. Typically a reman gives much better warranty than a rebuild and of course shops selling reman’s will say rebuilds aren’t as good. Just asked the question to get more opinions

I am not sure what the difference is between remanufactured and rebuilt .
Toyota dealerships sell new transmissions $$$$$$
I am not sure who carries a contract to sell reman A750 series transmissions
As far as I am concerned , a rebuilt transmission or remanufactured is as good as the shop doing the work .
    As an example .....
My basic warranty is 3 years with the latest updates . We make your transmission into a 2015 model other than ecu updates .
With this said , I own your transmission for 3 years and you can bet it will be a tough well built transmission .
I dont want to see you again other than performing a transmission fluid service at the 30,000 mile recommended interval

Depending on the transmission the dealer usually has a Reman option, regardless if it's reman or new they will only have a 1 year warranty from Toyota.

The shudder only happens in 5th. No shudder when staying in 4th and when shudder does happen in 5th moving lever to 4th stops the shudder.

Update: Had a tranny flush done and added two tubes of Dr. Tranny® Instant Shudder Fixx™. Have about 300 miles on it and so far so good. On occasion I think I feel a very slight shudder but maybe it’s just my imagination. I believe Dr. Tranny® Instant Shudder Fixx™ has done the trick. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who experiencing tranny shudder

Worked for me on my 06 Tacoma. 250k miles. Shudder shifting into 5th. Hard acceleration or driving in 4th no problems. Did a fluid change and shudder fix. I’m going on 6k miles with no problem. $30 fix saved me $3k.
