My Taco is currently in the dealer shop getting a new transmission. 18,000 miles trouble free. Then 'Check Engine' light and 'Trac Off' light came on. Trac Off disabled my cruise control. Transmission would not shift beyond 4th gear, even if attempted manually. Dealer says will replace the trans. Warranty service is stellar. I always loved Toyota trucks. I will be forgiving for any error so long as their service remains as good as it is. I believe this 6 speed automatic is very new for '16. I will cooperate with the learning curve so Toyota remains on top.

    Wow!
    Now that is a first.
Not very surprising given how our model's trans is always hunting for gears, but damn. o_O.
    Also, welcome to TW.

As a mechanic for over 21 years I seen all makes and models break down with high and low mileage and you are very correct in it all comes down to how the dealer handles the issue. Specially warranty concerns.

    What exactly failed?
I'd hate to have the whole damn thing replaced if a solenoid just failed "ON".

Splitbolt... I totally agree! Only fix what is broke. I'm nervous about a whole new transmission installed. But if that's what they demand, I'll expect they stand behind their workmanship.

Don't sweat it. A good tech and R and R a tranny with no problems. Frankly, the unit would probably have to be removed in any case. Might as well throw in a new one

It seems that is the way things are done at the dealer - repair by replacement. I took my truck in for the drivetrain whine (feather throttle at ~60MPH), and by the end of two attempts they replaced both my transmission and transfer case!
The whine is still there lol.

Edit: I will say that the service dept was very professional and met all the timings they set. I have had no problems with the new parts/installation workmanship either.

alot of dealers are like that here. Im a tech at honda, Honda wants us to always replace and not rebuild. Then the old trans gets sent back to Honda and they do a full rebuild and resell as reman. Also, most of the transmissions going into the vehicles are actually remans and not brand new, even when its warranty.

Better than safe than sorry, I suppose.

Going by the chart I posted, there's no fail-safe control for an "ON" malfunction, so...
Could also be; solenoid SLT, SL4 fail "OFF", valve body, No. 3 brake....

I was just curious if they gave you a reason why.
I've seen the refusing to upshift out of 4th complaint posted quite a few times.
Yours is the first I've heard of that hadn't eventually resolved itself.

My first 2017 Limited had the transmission replaced at 1,200 miles due to this and worked fine until it was totaled a couple of months ago at a little over 12, 000 miles. My new (second) 2017 Limited only has ~800 miles and has not exhibited this issue (yet).

I'm bringing in my truck this morning for what could be transmission number 3.

Remember, its all a money game too. The service dept is the bread winner of all dealerships, and if they can justify a higher margin repair to charge back to Toyota Motor Corp., you can bet they'll do it.

I wouldn't worry about a new versus repaired tranny. Just think, instead of a shiny new solenoid, you get a whole box of shiny new gears, too! Gears that don't have 18,000 miles on 'em.

same deal, trac off and check engine light on, scanned and brought up a low fuel pressure code, put on a fuel pump, drove it home, shut it off and when I started it again both lights reappeared, I don't think they have a clue at times, but when they pressure tested the fuel pump, it showed eratic readings, so I suppose they had to start somewhere. Truck runs like a top, no stalling or fuel starvation symptoms, just the freaking lights wont stay off !!
