I just switched from 285/75/16's e rated 10 ply to stock sport rims and tires. RPMS down, tire/rim weight is one of the main reasons for poor MPG

    its not too ugly ha

I have a fairly consistent avg of 20 to 20.5. Mostly hwy miles. To work is 30 miles one way. I do have a change of elevation of about 3300 ft. I get about 35 to work and 15 goinghome. Then running errands around town etc eat up the rest of my mileage. Trd OR AT all stock suspension, rims, tires etc. mods Are aluminum cbi T3 front bumper, Pelfrey high clearance rear, mobtown sliders, full set Pelfrey skids. Aluminum front skid and gas skid. Steel mid and transfer skid. I also have revolverx2 bed cover. Bed cover was my first mod and it helped my mileage slightly before I did the rest. I would say I gained about 1 with the bed cover but lost 2-3mpg with the armor. I plan on doing a lift and rims/tires. Expecting to lose about 2 more mpg.

Ok I’m getting 16-18 mix driving. I really try to not let the rpm go over 2000. How is everyone getting 20+ worried something is not right. Stock 2017 off-road dcsb

    Some possible factors,
Winter, cold temps, = poor mileage, ESPECIALLY if most of your driving is stop and go, or at least few long drives. ( I don't mean Trips, just short jaunts.
It doesn't take much to drop ones overall mileage values; M/S tires, ply ratings, weight you're carrying...
My experience is I HAVE TO drive jaunts of 16-20+ miles to get my mileage values up, then going back to local driving tears those values to shreads. Seriously.
I have to fill up, then take drives of 20+ miles at 56-60mph on generally flat terrain to get those values to a decent 21-23 value. But as soon as I revert to local driving, short jaunts, cold temps, stop and go, those numbers go right down to 17-18+/-. And I'm an old fart with an egg between the foot and petal.
So, thats about it. Take my essay, and apply any hot driving practices, stop and go, or worse yet, off road or even slow back road exploring, and your mileage tanks.
Wanna see.consistent.20 -'24+ values? Fill yer tank and do commutes of 20+ miles at 45-60 mph, with a very steady foot. NO aggressive driving habits. Good luck.

I hate that you can be at a good number then sitting at a light you can watch those numbers drop just by idling.

I don't feel idling should count against the MPG calculation. With the heat tires I have I'm lucky to break over 17mpg but earlier had a trip of 19.8mpg with about a 10 mile trip that was awesome.

yep.......especially if it is a new tank of gas......if you have lots of miles it is slower decay rate....but still horrible to watch

I find wind and terrain to be big factors. Rolling hills really makes it shift and knocks my fuel economy back, with a head wind it’s hard to hold 6th gear.

Air cleaner condition really doesn't have any effect on mpg, it may reduce power but not mpg. Well studied.

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/Air_Filter_Effects_02_26_2009.pdf

Altitude has a significant effect, the higher the altitude the better the mpg, lower wind resistance and less potential power. I get 3-4 mpg better at CO front range altitude compared to sea level.

I didn't buy my truck based on MPG but it would be nice to get closer to what the sticker says. I know the lift and tires don't help with that but no matter how I drive I've never been able to get an avg over 16.5 (and that's on a good day). I didn't really think a lot about it until a recent work trip where I had a rental Suburban for a couple of days. That big, heavy V8 powered thing averaged 21.2 MPG mixed driving, 75-80 MPH on the freeway, similar terrain etc to where I drive my truck. I'm not complaining, I love my truck but that Suburban's mileage surprised the hell out of me. It even got 2 MPG better than an Explorer rental I had recently too....

2017 ratings at high speed average ~48 MPH with the A/C off.

Also driving with the hood closed helps a bit. :anonymous:

I find that a tuned-up engine will get better MPG's than one that is not.

I get my best results by not using the cruise control and on days when it's not windy. In town just being slow and not in a rush is about all you can do.

Do you live in the PNW at all? Looks like it. My commute to work is 1 big hill which kills my mpgs. Also, the cold weather or winter gas blend really takes a toll on my truck. My other vehicles I've had...no issue oddly enough.

Had 250 pounds of water weight in my bed and mpgs went down to 15 combined. Took it out and now am getting 18.8.
