I still retrieve and cast with my right, I just switch the rod to my left hand when retrieving....I know, I know...Im going to get under some fly guys nerves. ;) This works for me though.

Pre loading the rod with your stripping hand on the forward and back stroke to get a more powerful cast with less effort

A more advanced technique that you don’t need to worry about just yet but may be more difficult to achieve later if u start kinda wonky. Some great fishermen never even learn to do it because the mostly short range nature of fly fishing

There is so much overlap between the casting and retrieving components that I feel u will be doing a disservice to yourself by switching hands
Again, not judging here and to each his own :)

It's a technique to help with flexing/loading the rod and thus increasing power & line speed. It's an advanced casting technique. I wouldn't even worry about that until you've mastered the basic casting stroke/cast.

Definitely a left hand retrieve for a fly setup. The rod fights and catches the fish while fly fishing whereas the reel fights and catches the fish on a spinning/casting setup. I use click pawl reels too so drag is in my grip not in the reel for my fly reels. I'd prefer to clumsily strip line with my left than clumsily hold the whole setup with my left. Now I have come around to a left hand bait caster too. No need to swap hands when working a top water walking bait now.

There's a dam that divides the upper Guadalupe and lower. So its just a tailwater. There are some trout that do survive the summer and are monsters, Texas wildlife department stocks the river every year though.

This is my go to Spring Caddis emerger. The Lawson's Emerger. It's easy to tie and killer dropped behind Peacock Caddis or Puterbaugh Black Foam Caddis.
