    Just the basics
Took a four day trip to DV. Dialed in my budget awning even more than on previous trips. Thanks to @Crom for inspiring me to pick up some of those S-hook bungees. I used all four to decrease flapping from the wind. I can also adjust the portion attached to the orange tent poles to lower it down a bit during afternoon shade. Then on the last day I thought why not flip the tarp over so the small webbing for lines is below the tarp so I can hang a light from it. Winner!

I can also attest to my awning system being pretty stout. My last evening there after finally putting my poncho liner inside my sleeping bag for better heat retention I was getting the best nights sleep there during my four nights and some damned burros were getting into my fire tender eating some cardboard. When my slumbering mind figured out what was goin on some strong language alerted the burros to my unhappiness. They bolted and I felt the truck move. Well outside cleaning up the mess I found one of my tent stakes was bent. My guess is the burro carried the guy line while making a run for the open wash nearby. Good times.

On the way out I spotted a lone Tacoma who looks to have his set up pretty organized too. I'm guessing he's seen Crom's build. Very similar ideas.

Headed down to Death Valley a couple weeks ago; finally got photos edited and the story written up... enjoy

    Death Valley 2018: Intro & Day 1
    A Day of Driving

We’d gotten everything ready to go the day before – meals pre-cooked,
truck completely packed – including the fridge (plugged into the 120v
in the garage) – so that as soon as we dropped off @mini.turbodb at school,
@mrs.turbodb and I could head south.

By 7:45am, we were on the road.

    Death Valley 2018: Day 2
    Colors Everywhere

... And then, we reached Red Pass, the highest point between Titanothere and Titus Canyons.
We understandably ran into a bit of a traffic jam here - a couple in a Jeep enjoying the view
in both directions; three trucks in front of us, taking the turn slow (for reasons we'll get into shortly).

Can't say I blame anyone for slowing down or stopping here. It was amazing...

    Does It Get Any Better?

Cognizant of our limited daylight, we pulled out of the mine
and paused only briefly at the infamous sign at the top of Lippincott Pass

HIGH CLEARANCE | NO TOW SERVICE | CAUTION.

    Just what we wanted.

You Don't See This Every Day

... around 1:00am, the wind got significantly colder, and we started
to feel moisture in the air. We didn't realize it at the time as
we zipped up the remaining windows, but the moisture we were feeling was snow...

So yeah - we went to Death Valley to escape the cold, and we got snowed on.

You don't see that every day.

    Eventful Trip Home

...Now, an astute reader may remember that on our way to Beatty from
the northeast, we nearly ran out of gas. Not to be outdone
coming from the southwest, the fuel light in the truck came on just as we pulled
out of Stovepipe wells - some 32 miles from Beatty...

I spend most of my time over at the 3rd gen forum, but I'm glad I found this thread. I love seeing camping pics. My 7 year old son and I are planning our spring camping trips...if this Montana weather ever warms up enough.

Thanks! Totally worth it - from Phoenix, you might be able to pull it off in a long weekend. Or even better - two! :) If it were just 6 hours from us, we'd be back all the time! (Not that there aren't other, closer, "Grand" things down your direction to explore! hahahaha)

Best thing about being in Las Vegas is that almost everything is within 5-6 hours of driving. If you go out to 10 hours I can be in Southern Idaho, most of California, western Colorado, and all of Arizona and New Mexico.

This is absolutely one of my favorite threads on TW. It shows all gens camping. Love it.
