I remember passing the Kolob exit on the. Interstate...was so tempted to check it out but I needed to head home.
Maybe I'll go back. Maybe they'll build the 10 story parking garage next to the visitor center that they need.
Parts of the park were pretty. I REALLY wanted to love it. Maybe I just picked a bad week...

Your Zion experience was like ours. Too. Many. People!

We figured it was a weekday and the kids were back in school, it should have been traffic free... but it wasn't. We circled for a while at the visitor's center, drove through the park and then back to the VC, circled, finally parked on the main road and walked in, got in line for a shuttle but were told it was a 2.75 hr wait from where we were... so we GTFO. Hiked a bit of the Watchman Trail and then headed for Bryce. Zion was beautiful but too busy.

We though about doing the Kolob Canyon especially because it appeared there was a summer only 4WD road dropping out of them... but by the time we got moving towards Bryce we didn't want to go back through the park to get up to Kolob Canyons.

We really like St George a lot, BTW. Interesting town. Seemed very "new". We had dinner at this place called "The Gun Barrel" and it was absolutely the best meal of the trip.

    Great report!

Wait. Theres a Gun Barrel down there!?!? There's one in Jackson, WY. Best prime rib ever. Damn it! If I would have known that I would have stopped for dinner there....gaah !

Hey Weesa, glad to see you finally made it to UT! Sorry to hear Zion was a mess. We went a year ago October and it was packed. Came to find out UT schools have Fall break in the middle of Oct. Pretty sure that added to what's become an already crowded park. I saw on Zion's FB page they closed down one of the roads for awhile today due to heavy traffic. I'm guessing lots of folks decided to take Thanksgiving week off, load up the kiddos and stop by Zion on their way to see family.

Still, if you can deal with the crowds, it's a cool place. Best to stay in/near the park and start off at first light, then get back by early afternoon and chill as the rest of the toddler laden crowd makes a mess of the traffic. Also, I second Kolob Canyons. We stopped by there last year (my first time) and, with the main park packed, it was uncrowded. Spent most of a day there and it was nice and peaceful.

I occasionally keep fortune cookie fortunes that I like - cheesy, I know. Was just cleaning and found this one. Can't remember when I got it but couldn't have been that long ago since its not all squished.

As winter and cabin fever have set in here in MT I've found myself wishing for warmer days, camping trips and travels.

I can't wait to get back to UT again. For many reasons. I know I only scratched the surface when it comes to places to explore down there and with the recent developments with Bear's Ears and Escalante I feel like I NEED to get back down there sooner rather than later. In 2018? Maybe. Hopefully. This last trip was a recon mission in a lot of ways. I got to see a lot of great things but more importantly I know the lay of the land, know the highlights and disappointments. And that can only mean that the next trip will be even more amazing!
