Your going to make me get a second Scan Guage to watch the temp on my 2015 2.7, The SGII lives in the LC and the LC loves to hold itself in the 180 ranges very very well.

I can’t remember what the Tacoma held at though. Only has 34K on it but now I’m very intrigued.

Now that I've been using the grill cover for a few weeks I can say that unless it's over 40 degrees I leave it completely shut. I keep an eye on it while I'm driving and there is no way I can list what temp it runs at at what temp at what speed. It fluctuates a lot. Once I get off the interstate on my way home or to work the temp always goes up. It runs warmer around town. All in all, with the grill cover it stays much closer to 180 degrees than it ever did before. If it gets down around 10 degrees it still never touches 180 degrees on the interstate. Usually stays around 177-179.

I have a 15 mile drive each way to work so my truck gets run plenty at normal operating temp. However, I still take it out on the weekends a couple times a month and drive around for a few hours on dirt trails. I've noticed that even though my truck is run mostly on the highway at operating temp for 30 minutes a day it still runs better after a few hours on the weekend at operating temp. I suspect even a 2004 needs to be "blown out" regularly. The way I do it though is at 2000-2500 rpm for anywhere from 1-4 hours instead of the proverbial "Italian Tune-up".

I can go exploring, lubricate the hubs and clean out the engine all at once without revving it to the moon. Once winter "really" sets in there's no point since the interstate is regularly like the Baja 1000 not to mention the dirt roads I like become impassable even with 4 wheel drive. I was on one of the dirt roads I like last winter. Drove about 10 miles on it and when I was just about 3 miles from the paved road ran into about a 3-5 ft. snowdrift. I had to turn around and go all the way back.

It takes 6 if you can get it all to drain.. which i have yet to be able to do.. It takes 4 1/2 typically for me to fill it.. as i don't know why, but it doesn't all drain when i pull the plug, i assume there has to be something, design wise, that wasn't well thought out.. At first i thought maybe it had a dual sump pan, but.. it's just the way it's designed.. I would just read the dipstick as best you can.. Using 6 quarts isn't really terrible for it though, as it's still under the rotating assembly.. and doesn't submerge it.

Most engines are designed to pool small amounts of oil in critical areas, namely the cam lobes by what I have personally seen (and surely some other areas that I have not seen). The cylinder head has small recesses below the cam, so that the lobe - and perhaps the entire circumference of the cam "journal" - will pass below the surface of the trapped oil. This ensures that some critical parts receive immediate lubrication on start up, and at the same time causes some old oil to remain after a drain. I think this is a good design and worth any small amount of old oil that remains in the engine.

This design does not explain all of the old oil that is not drained, probably other small nooks or valleys that were not intentional but are there regardless. Replacing 92% of the oil is enough to call it "changed." Obviously the people who make these vehicles are in agreement.

1.5Qts of nooks is a lot of nooks.. LOL..
But i hear you, i have had plenty of engines apart.. It's just the Taco 4cyl is a 30+ year old design, But, if it ain't broke don't fix it.. Still kinda annoying to have old oil left over in the engine after you spend $$$ on premium Synthetic.

I just went and checked mine and its 1/4 over top notch on dipstick. Its about 2500 miles until next change is due. I put in 6 at last change. Should i try and drain some? Yall got me nervous about this blowing seals shit. (had to give that up cause they bite :D)

Note: when i changed it last time it was on an inclined driveway and the stick showed level with top notch it i remember correctly.

No need to drain if it's only 1/4 above top mark. Tons of people (and auto service centers) add 6qt at every oil change and they run a full service interval 1/4 inch above full, no issues at all. If you were closer to 3/4 inch above full it might be a good idea. But there is no specific oil level beyond which there is danger to the engine seals. It's different for every engine and fortunately these engines are pretty tough.

Just changed mine yesterday. A 5 litre jug brought it to within 1/4" of the top dot...added another 200ml to bring it up. 5.2L = 5.49 quarts. I'll stick with that.

It takes quite a bit of extra oil to cause real problems in most engines. When i was in high school autobody one of my classmates asked me to help. "I just changed my oil and now it won't start" Found out he put an entire case in his jeep. That was too much, don't do that

In the old days, a larger oil pan was cheaper and easier than installing an oil cooler to keep the oil from cooking. Maybe this is why Toyota put on a 6qt pan (?).

The 2TR is a fairly universal engine used in various applications worldwide, which is why it's often referred to as an "industrial" engine due to it's overly robust build. So you might be right!

2005 2.7L with 206,500 miles and I always add 6qt at every oil change. Runs like the day I drove it off the lot. I dump about 2/3qt into the oil filter before installing it, so it doesn't dry-start.

The ONE time I had the stealership change the oil, they only put 5qt in it and argued with me about that....so I've done the other 50 oil changes myself. Also makes it 100% easier to buy a 5qt jug and a 1qt at Walmart and go dump both in...I don't have to use my brain meat to watch 4.6 or 6.1 or whatever various sources quote.
