Honestly, I don't think my faithful entrenching tool from Army days can handle this Colorado soil of Rock & Clay. I would go with explosives, makes a good hole and lots of fun too.

Totally EAF, but they don't fold down.

Disadvantage of having a 4runner is real estate is filling up quick. It might make sense to loose the RTT and go to an awning tent or other style with cots

We beat our e-tools to death at carson all the time and they never seemed to give up. Maybe you guys got the new garbage lightweight ones cause ours looked like they were 100 years old and stupid heavy.

 

Nope mine was solid (and old) but it seems everywhere we dug in was sand/ loose soil so easy peasy. Soil here is a different animal altogether but if you dug here, than e-tool must be good.

 

I got a little folding SOG shovel to keep in the truck. It's tiny and won't be for digging big stuff, and i haven't tried it yet but just got to have instead of nothing. And it was $20. I think it has a blade like thing on one side?

No #EAF points though since it's hidden out of view and not bolted to the fender.

There is a full size shovel in the decked drawer for real digging.

 

But does it work in snow drifts?

That's it. You would need to mount that thing to a roof rack for max EAF points.

That guy's a genius though. Cut some teeth in a $20 shovel, paint it bright colors, and sell it for 5x markup. After you achieve EAF status people will buy it no matter what.

For that price you could buy a quality shovel and ax, with proper hickory handles. Rattly, metal handle doesn't sound enjoyable to use.

as long as you're working garden soil like the guy in the pics, should be ok.


If you ever swing an axe with a metal, somewhat floppy loose handle, (pinned together is not tight) let me know if you think it's a good idea to do it again.

 

A good splitting maul will double as a sledge hammer.
A shovel should be shovel shaped, handle is up to you, wood or fiberglass ftw.
The pulaski is underrated and seldom used correctly. Used to be required recovery hardware when in the backwoods or trail riding years ago by the USFS, it's not required anymore due to people removing toes and such.
