I am sure this has been discussed many times, but I am looking into getting a hard tri-fold tonneau cover for my 2016 short bed tacoma double cab. I have seen that Extang and Bakflip seem to be the two I see the most recommendations for. I am looking for:

    1. Easy to take off/reinstall without tools (if I need to take it off in a snap while I at Home Depot etc.)

    2. Ability to lock

    3. Are there any that use the existing Tacoma deck rails? I watched a video for the Extang and it looks like they have you remove the existing deck rails and install their own and remove a part up by the cab as well.

I have done some more research and like the looks/functionality of the Extang Encore. I guess my main question, does anyone know if this one, or any others for that matter, use the factory installed deck rail system? Or do you have to remove that and install their (Extang's or some other companies) own deck rail system?

Thanks. I contacted Extang after watching this and they also said that the factory rails get reinstalled right underneath their rail system. He sent me installation instructions. The only thing I didn't like was that it has you drill a hole in your bed for the drain tube. Debating between Extang Encore, Solid Fold 2.0 (uses existing rail system) or Bakflip MX4

Okay, after doing more research and watching some installation videos I decided to get the Extang Encore. It comes Friday!! I'll post some pictures after I install it.

I finally had a chance to install it yesterday, no pics yet, but soon. A couple of things. Mine did not come with the foam spacer block to make sure that the drain rails were the proper distance. However, I did my best and it seems to be okay. I am going to contact Extang to see if they can send me one so I can just double check.

Other issues: 1) The latches on tailgate section are very hard for me to get to actually latch on. I really have to slam it to get them to latch. The drain rails are level, I tried adjusting the latches in/out and nothing changed that. They do latch, but I really have to slam it shut. 2) No rain yet, but even with just a heavy dew overnight there was some water leaking in from the back corners by the window and the corners by the tailgate. Seems like an easy fix would be to just put down some thin self adhesive weather stripping in those areas. 3) Seems like the seal on the tailgate sits just on the very very edge of the tailgate towards the inside. However, it does look like there are three lines of seals on the cover and that they may create a barrier as it didn't seem like it was leaking there.

Overall though, I like the looks and functionality of it. We'll see if I can fix the slight leaking issues. I didn't finish installing the drain tubes yet, but I think I will just enlarge the holes that are already in the plastic bed cover and stick them down there.
