Does anyone know if this just affects parking? Or is it for driving and parking on the beach?
It should be for entering the beach (for non-locals) instead of just parking. If it's just a fee for parking, you will still have a lot of traffic.

They should also go ahead and make it illegal to drive anywhere except further back near the dunes during the summer. There are too many people and kids playing in middle of beach or near water to have people driving through near the shoreline.

The way I read the story is the fee is for parking on the beach only. You can still drive on the beach and not pay anything. I for one will not be going to that beach anymore if they want to charge me $150 for the year. We come down that way maybe 6 times a year for a day or even over night trip to enjoy the beach.

I agree with the dune side driving. Always hate it when people drive so close to my setup with my daughter playing there

I love me some Emerald Isle.

Honestly, name one other location where an ORV can drive on the beach and not pay a fee. Everywhere I have been you pay for that privilege. $150 is steep, but I think the pass for Hatteras is similar in price and you get a ton of beach to drive on.

$150 is steep for a mile of beach to drive on, I just don't see that making people pay a fee will "teach them proper beach driving"

Agreed, $150 is steep for that. I think the fee is there as a discouragement. Those who want to try to drive on the beach and park with their mini van may second guess that now.

Shit, I pay 90 here and that gets me about a mile to drove on in the summer. They close it down for nesting birds. Winter time let's us us access the whole park and the point which is a few square miles across.

I think the purpose of the fee is to reduce the amount of people. Specifically people who are making day trips since the minimum pass you can purchase is a 10-day pass.
I'm all for it because there are way too many people during the summer.

I agree with both of these comments as too many idiots go out there and im sure it is more crowded then it ever has been because more people own 4x4 vehicles these days. I personally will not be driving down for a day trip anymore with that fee. Would rather go south and enjoy less people if im going to pay a fee. Its not my beach or area to say its a good deal or not but it will make me take my money other places. (not like that will hurt them)

Anyone headed down this weekend? I'm doing an impromptu trip to Hatteras Village for some drum fishing.

I've been following the road reports down there and seems like 12 is now "passable" all the way to the Ocracoke Ferry.

Everything is good. Lots of slot fish at the point yesterday and a random spurt of citation fish last Wednesday. I was gunna go tonight but the water temps don’t look that great.

I used to go to Cape Hatteras with any free time I had for most of the ‘90s. Fishing and surfing, camping too. Now I live near Chicago....
Anyway I’ll be taking my family down there for an entire week in mid-August and we’re all excited. I’ll be following this thread for sure

We've been on the south side of the point all day. Saw a slot fish get caught by about a 5 year old around noon. Nothing but Dogfish for us all day.

Hmm makes me wonder about reports sometimes. Next weekend is looking ok, but the wind forecast shows it gusting 30-40 Saturday afternoon. I need to get down there again, this bass fishing stuff is getting tiresome.

Nah, we fished all day so it was time to call it. In about another month or so we will have the run of stripers off our beach at home so time to get ready for that.

Black drum were caught in this surf this weekend. When I get back in town I'll be hitting Assateague all weekend.
