I sold Cutco when I was in college. Fantastic knives. My folks still have them 30 years later and they haven't lost their edge. The bread knife still cuts so cleanly there aren't any crumbs.

The thing for me is they have to be sharp. I hate dull knives...or the old "serrated" knives from walmart or Kmart...

I agree with this. These mentioned above are perfectly fine. Just check them out - I have JA Henckels that are made in Germany, Spain and China. They look almost exactly the same, but not near the same quality. The China one cannot even get sharp to begin with. The Spain and Germany knifes can both get razor sharp, but the German one keeps the edge longer. They are priced accordingly.
So, just because you can buy a JA Henckel at Walmart or Target for half the price than at kitchen stores or online does not always mean it is an awesome deal - It all depends what you want to do with it - I use the China made one all the time, usually perfectly fine, but not the same experience as the others.

Thanks for pointing out the Made In _____ @Boerseun makes perfect sense.

Made my first selection this morning:
I had a remaining gift card to Crate & Barrel so I splurged on a Wüsthof 6” Chefs knife that was A. on sale and B. Made in Germany.

That will be an awesome knife for you - you can probably use it for 90% of your cutting needs.
    Congrats! :)

    The workhorse: http://www.cutleryandmore.com/wusthof-classic/chefs-knife-p1601
The 8” is on sale for 99$

    Cheap awesome steel paring knives:
    https://www.katom.com/135-S1043PCP....MI0aba7JqX2QIVE7XACh1xjgmREAQYASABEgKxRfD_BwE

Gonna need a boning/carving knife with a thin flexible blade. I love my https://www.amazon.com/Wusthof-Classic-6-3-Inch-Hollow-Euro-Utility/dp/B00005MGKA

Santokus (Asian style chefs knife) are great too with a different blade profile.
I have Shun and wusthof santokus but they don’t see as nearly much use as the wusthof chef knife lol. Personal preference I guess, better get one of each to see what u like :)

I like the wusthof price point too. The Japanese knives get pricey quick lol

You’ll need a good steel to keep those edges keen :)

That's on the menu for one day this week for dinner. Doing biscuits, sausage gravy, hash browns, eggs and link sausage. Man this is now making me hungry, if we didn't have a appt with our tax person tonight I would make it tonight.
