If thats not quote worthy, i dont know what is....

That being said, the best way to know what woods are what, is to look and work with more types of wood.

Go to woodcraft (there is one here in harrisburg) or a good lumber yard, and browse.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Looks like my grandfather's old saw. HEAVY
    Don't forget taste...
    Definitely an experience thing.
Yep, beats any lumber yard out there.
    I just use this...

Anybody design furniture using the 3 to 5 ratio?

If yes, do you believe this principal has validity?

I'm assuming you are referencing whats also known as the golden ratio (1:1.618). 5/3 = 1.666 - close enough for woodworking. There is a ton of research out there about the golden ratio, and how it somehow always looks good to humans.

I dont plan out or measure specifically for it, I just do what looks good. Which I'm willing to bet comes somewhere close to that ratio. I view my woodworking as a hobby that brings me happiness. Trying to specifically measure / layout to some arbitrary ratio seems a bit tedious to me, and would surely take the organic nature and fun out of it for me.

I just make what i think looks good. If that happens to coincide with the golden ratio, great. If not, oh well.

Johnson’s wax, in the big box stores where cleaning supplies are found.

For sure, Jim Tolpin wrote a good book about ratios. But I can’t remember it all.

If you have limited space to store/use, I'd be wary of a contractor saw because the motor sticks out so far, it increases the foot print considerably.

Unfamilar with the particluar saw, but sounds like it may be a good deal:

What I really want is a good depressed center mitre saw bench/stand that I can knock down or fold down. But hard to justify room for all this unless it is a serious hobby or your profession. I mean, where do the kid's bikes and spare highchair go? I just cracked open my Visio garage planning file and started measuring the "new" garage.

Not a big project but my wife wanted the pantry shelves more evenly spaced basically leaving the top shelf alone. It ended up working just right to go from 4 overly tall shelves to 6 moderately spaced shelves. I had just enough lumber to add the 2 shelves...;)

Removable wings and outfeed tables. Tablesaw is big enough for the larger cuts, take the wings and the outfeed can become a bench and you still have the tablesaw available for smaller cuts:D
