Is this officially normal/harmless or is there no fix yet?

There is a TSB out to fix the issue for the 2016-2017 TRDs. I would link thread but I am on mobile. Hopefully it will move to the rest of the 2016-2017s and then on to the 2018’s. The noise is just noise that resonates through the cab and frame. Word on the street is the TSB is doing its job.

    Well that didn't work.

Apparently the noise they diagnosed six months ago and that I've been listening too in the interim may not be the same noise the TSB is for.

So they won't order my parts until they re-diagnose the problem.

    Frustrating.

I'm not blaming the dealer. They just want to make sure they get paid. It's a huge corporate dealer.

I'm more frustrated with the lady who has my case open at the Toyota Corporate level.

I had the noise diagnosed 6 months ago and she has been checking in monthly to let me know whether or not there has been a fix for it. After I forward her the TSB document (thanks TW), she told me to make an appointment to get it done.

Then when I call the dealer, they said they'd have to diagnose it again, so I thought calling her back would help but she just echoed the dealer.

I mean honestly nobody is put out by this but me, they really have no incentive to do more than what is normally done.

    Oh well, I'm just venting.

I showed them the TSB last week when I went in for my 15k mile service, and they went ahead and placed an order for the parts without "re-diagnosing". Just got the call this morning that they are in, so I'm dropping it off Monday morning to have the work done - I'll update once I pick it up. I have to say, although annoying, it hasn't really been bothering me that much, I guess I have just learned to live with it. Glad to see they have finally acknowledged it though.

Looks like it would not be a cheap fix if you were paying out of pocket.

Yes and no, us long beds don't get the springs. Parts for me would only be $165.97. After reading through the TSB, it could be an easy DIY.

I'm still waiting for the "parts are in" call, mine were ordered last Thursday.

Hmm $166 might be worth it to me. I am supposed to contact the shop manager today to see if the TSB will be extended to 2018 SR5s anytime soon. If he doesn't have good news I might just bite the bullet and order the parts myself. I am a long bed so no new springs which is nice. We shall see!

Edit: Thanks for the part numbers, @Mace587!

Mine is at the dealer with parts on order. I am very critical of this issue so if this bad boy goes silent I'll be here with bells on letting y'all know. Hell maybe I'll keep the truck more than 2 years.

I wouldnt try to squeeze in more gear oil than the owners manual states, by adding more than necessary added pressure will build up in the differential and place more stress on the seals which possibly cause leakage or a blown seal, if anything just fill till it dribbles out of the fill hole that should be plenty of oil.

Did they say when the parts may arrive? Let us know how it all goes! I’ve heard of a few that had the TSB done and the noise is gone!

Communication has been a real problem between toyota and the dealer. Ive already called today and i am awaiting a call back. I have to bird dog any information constantly. They just feel like it'll be ready when its ready because I have a loaner.

Trying to figure out why people are upset with those of us that say we also have this high pitch noise? New here so maybe I am missing some history here. I love my truck, but I definitely have this noise. I wouldn't just make it up.

Mine is a 2018 Manual Transmission Off Road. Hopefully they include the 2018 at some point. I can definitely deal with it my ears are ruined buy my wife hates it. I guess I have learned to tune out high pitch noise :)

Nobody is upset that you have the noise...although from your brief description it may or may not be what is being discussed on this thread.

People got tired of 200+ pages of people ASSuming that their rear ends were going to explode.

A lot of us who posted here had or continue to have the noise.

Oh ok. Well i definitely don't think my truck is going to explode. HaHa. But if there is something out there that will fix the high pitch noise that i hear while driving that would be awesome. Maybe my noise is a different problem than this thread, although i didn't see another thread describing this issue.

Sounds like it could be the rear diff howl. Mine sounds fairly high pitched and can definitely tell it’s coming from the rear of the truck. If your noise happens between 50 to 60moh ish on deceleration or light feathering then that is it. Some are louder than others. Some happen over a broad range and others only over a few mph. Some are quiet and some are loud. This is all based off of Tacoma world comments FYI Good news is the TSB has been working. Bad news is it’s not for our trucks yet :fingerscrossed: haha
