TRD DC OR vs DC Sport or Mod OR to handle like Sport?

I am in the process of attempting to buy my first new Tacoma. I have spent a long time reading the various posts on this site and my takeaway is that some folks feel that the OR ride is more comfortable than the Sport however to me it was the opposite. I test drove both the 2018 TRD OR and TRD Sport back to back today, and the Sport just felt "tighter" actually more comfortable to me, the OR felt "bouncy." I am on the fence about the Sport hood blocking my vision although I would assume I would get used to it. As I will mainly be driving in Los Angeles and hopefully camping a little on the weekends, my priority would be ride comfort and road handling. I plan on keeping this truck for a very long time, so I am interested in both the technology and the premium package, not very hard to find with the OR but hard to find in the Sport. My question is, if I got the OR how costly would it be to change out the rims/tires or suspension to have it handle more like the sport? Also, does anyone who got the OR regret not getting the sport? Just for reference, I am coming from an 09 Tacoma Single cab that has served me very well. Any and all feedback is appreciated.

You could change the suspension, probably find someone who has a sport that’s upgrading to aftermarket stuff for not too much $$$.
Could also get a thicker front sway-bar, and add a sway-bar to the rear.

Forgive my ignorance here but aside from changing the suspension, and front and rear sway bar's, how much do the tires and wheel size play into the equation?

It doesn't sound like you need an OR. Why not just try harder to find the Sport with your desires?

Regarding the scooped hood... it is highly desired and you can swap it out + cash with an OR owner pretty quickly, if you wanted to.

Most people who got the OR won’t regret getting it over the sport is cause the main two reasons/difference between sport and OR is crawl control and suspension (there are other stuff, but those are the main ones).

What you have described as the suspension feel is exactly how it is suppose to be. OR has suspension system that is meant for off-road trails so that means not tight, a bit more body roll, and bouncy compared to sport which will be a harsher ride off-road.

You can swap the suspension out to feel more like the sport, but that will be unwise of you since the bulk of the difference in price is due to the suspension systems (reason why OR is more expensive than sport). To compare it with something; it’s like buying Chick-fil-A sandwich, but want burger instead so you buy the sandwich and then go to Whataburger/in or out and order just a patty so you can replace the chicken in the sandwich.

Why not get an Outback, Ridgeline, Golf Alltrack, or similar camping-worthy rig that would be better suited to the pavement grind? If you're dead set on the Tacoma, the Sport exists almost specifically for the usage mix you're looking for. Also might look at a Limited if you need the tech package.

    stock (for now)
    1. A set of sport wheels and tires can be found her easily for less than $800 and you can probably sell the OR's for the same price you paid for the sports.

    2. I've seen suspensions for sale here super cheap and even "free get this out of my garage"

3 if you get a sport and don't end of up liking the hood you can EASILY trade it with some one here with some cash on top.

Stock and Good year duratrac felt like a boat on my OR but I changed to KO2 and it's firmer so I can drive like a suv now.

Exactly, sounds like the Limited Tacoma would be more to his liking.

IMO, the OR is the better truck..

You get a locker and crawl control..

Thanks for the feedback, I looked into the limited however my color of choice is cement which makes that also challenging. In terms of getting an outback or something similar, there are times when I need to use the truck as a truck and carry full sheets of plywood or 16-foot lumber etc, was planning on getting a rack for the Tacoma. The only dealer I could find in a 500-mile radius from me with the color/specs I want in a Sport will only go $400 below sticker.

I wish I’d gotten the sport. I love the scoop and the color matched wheel arches and bumper. I’ve never used crawl control or the rear locker since I don’t go off-reading.
