Hey guys, just bought a Tacoma and can't wait to do a lift and some sweet tires. I'm going with the Bilstein 5100's and am trying to decide between 275/70/R17 and 285/70/R17. What is making this decision not easy is whether or not I'll need UCAs with the 285s. I'm pretty tight on the budget and can't really afford another ~$700 to go into the UCAs. Some people say you can get away with not doing it, others say you can't get the right alignment without, I'm interested to hear what TW has to say! Also, how big of a difference does it even make visually? The 285s are only 0.5" bigger diameter. Any other costs I might not be aware of in going with 285s over the 275s?

    Thanks guys!

    Welcome to TW!

The need for UCAs is based on lift height. The higher you go the more you need them. While some may say you can get away without them, the alignment not meeting spec will cause uneven tire wear which will cost you more in the long run.

Take a look at this thread for making informed choices on tires. While the size is different the concept is the same:

The closer you approach or go over 2.5" of lift, it is HIGHLY recommended that you get UCA's.
