I’m curious - anybody running a RTT on a bed rack low enough to get surfboard or kayaks on the OEM roof rack and clear the tent?

I’m thinking about getting a RTT this spring but need to carry it, a few boards, and still have access to the bed. I know I can just strap the boards to the top of the tent but would rather be as aerodynamic as possible.

I know I can also run some low pro bed bars with enough room for boards up top- but don’t know how easy the bed is to access with the tent open.

Pictures and thoughts are appreciated. Also forgive me if this is a repeat thread- just point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

You could also try undermounting them on the bed rack depending on how long your boards are.

    This

Do a mid-high height bed rack and then some low bed bars underneath, if you have a short bed you could do some 2-3" rise bed bars to get the boards just high enough to clear the tailgate

    How long are your boards?

Do you have a 6' bed or 5' bed?

Or as you mentioned run the RTT on low bed bars to keep it below cab height and then boards on top of the cab rack

Thanks for the quick reply‘s and helpful ideas. Unfortunately I’m running a double cab short bed and my surfboards are 8 to 9 foot. I’d rather keep the boards within the profile of the truck, just to be safe.

In a perfect world- I could also keep using my trifold tonneau cover. But that’s never gonna happen!

I think your best bet is going to be keep the RTT as low as possible, below roof height and run the boards on top of the truck.

With the right bed bars you can keep your tonneau, but it will limit its ability to open - @KB Voodoo ?

Here is the height the bars from kb voodoo get you , I haven't had them on my 2nd gen yet but should be close to the same height, probably bang on with the factory roof rack , and you can keep the tonneau cover on 20170923_155914.jpg

Really appreciate the prompt feedback everyone, looks like all roads lead back to @KB Voodoo. I think that’s probably my best bet moving forward - maybe one day I’ll upgrade to a retract tonneau system and get the best of all worlds.

@mangler thanks for posting the image- I think you’re right that it’ll be perfect height with the factory rack.

I’ll post an update when I get it done this spring.
