Cabelas has their CGR rods marked down to 39.99. I really like my 2wt CGR and am trying to decide between the 5 wt or the 5/6wt. Leaning towards the 5/6. Anyone have these rods???

No input on the 5/6 wt but I have the 2 wt CGR. What reel are you using on yours?
    Thanks!

I have a BK on my 5 wt and it works great. I've used it landing many heavy fighting salmon and it just keeps on plugging along. I only rarely use the drag though. I palm the spool more these days to apply drag.

I bought the BK years ago before I knew any better that a more expensive reel really wasn't necessary for my type of fishing.

I have been amazed at the Chinese quality of reels lately.

I really like the click pawl style of palming the reel for more drag and that's also my hesitation on the 5/6 vs the 5 CGR as the handles are different

Just started the fly fishing. Found a guy that ties and sells on NAFFF. So starts another hole to throw money into.

Embarrassed to say but it was my first time out this year. Won't go that long again especially after landing some browns. Made me work pretty hard for it, too. Always a good time on the river!

Looks like you’re set for the mother’s day caddis hatch on the Arkansas.

Sure did, Jerry was great to work with. I just started fly fishing last summer. Dude said he looked at the Colorado hatch chart and would send me what I need. He sent me a jar of bonus flies too, comes out to under a buck a fly.

My boy turned 8 today. I was hoping to get him his own set up for learning to flyfish. Problem, so many options and ways to go with it. Buy him a 6.5-7’ 3 wt, or 8-8.5’ 4/5 wt. Hes a little guy, 4’ tall and just under 50lbs.

I’ve seen the kids rods with thinner corks, and was leaning that direction. But then think if I get him something bigger, he could use it a long time, but it may not be the best to learn on for him.

Thoughts or perspective from anyone that has taught their kids?

I was around that age when I taught myself how to fly cast. The only thing I had available was a garage sale fly rod. I have no idea what the wt was, but I knew it was an adults' rod. It didn't seem to bother me that it was bulky in my small hands.

Get him the 3 wt. If he takes to it, you already know you will be getting him another rod.

Memory recall: We had barn cats. Fly casting in the back yard whipping the cats was a good time. They couldn't see the leader, but they sure could feel it! I was a shit!

    Thanks.

I hope he takes to it, I’d hate to do it without him.

    Me, too.
    I see it too often.
Guys I work with have boys that have no interest in out door activities. The dads try to be supportive, but I can tell they are a little heart broken when they go out alone.

Electronics consume kids lives these days. Anytime I can get him away from them is a win. Raining here today, so our options were limited, but we went and bowled a few games.
