My back passenger brake is getting really hot. Like I throw snow on it and it melts and evaporates really fast. I took the ebrake cable off thinking that could be the problem and it wasn’t, still gets hot.

Any ideas? I’m up on the mountain with very very very limited tools, have a car hauler on the way but would attempt to work on it if it’s something I can manage.

I'm sure that with all the posts on this very subject, you'll find an answer to your problem.

When you do, please let me know, as I have this problem and still haven't found out the cause. The only thing I can think of is that I did the last time I replaced the shoes I did so not using OEM replacement parts. :goingcrazy:

Its been a while since I messed with a drum but there should be a spring that pushes a metal piece to the adjuster knob and holds it in place. Usually driving in reverse and hitting/tapping the brakes adjusts it to the proper tension. If the adjuster knob teeth are worn or the metal piece that clicks on the teeth is worn or the spring is worn it would not stop adjusting and cause a hot brake. other thing is a bad bearing. You need to find out if the brake is actually dragging or not. if not Id say its a bearing.

I don’t have a spring so that probably isn’t helping me out, on the outside of the drum anyway.

Tensioner knob, the metal piece thats touching it should be touching the knurled piece. spring below the red highlighted area should be tight. If the knurl is worn or the metal piece is not touching it will keep adjusting till it locks your tire.

So when I try and move the thing the brake cable attaches to nothing moves inside the drum, on the drivers side you can hear stuff moving.

Something much be seized or messed up. Probably just have to look at it at home.

That’s probably what’s wrong. Pull the drum off at home I guess.

To get home you want to "loosen" the adjuster, done thru the slot, in the vid. As long as you don't use the e brake you should get home. Then study up some more and try to determine the culprit allowing the "over adjustment".

    Got to go, good luck.

when you get to where you can work on her, replace the springs at a minimum. I battled this for a few months... EVERYTHING looks ok and functions but the P/S rear kept over-adjusting. The springs get weak over the years and when you pull the parking brake it actuates the adjuster... sometimes it is one click, sometimes it is two and over a period of time it will self adjust to the point of locking up, then the drum is a very difficult to get off. It takes a bit of fiddling with 2 screwdrivers, one to depress the adjusting lever and the other to back off the adjuster. It can be done but you are so pissed off at having to do this for the 50th time that you just want to shoot the damn truck and be done with it. I think it was $120 ish for all new hardware from Toyota for both sides.

CAnt em the adjuster to loosen, I can feel the teeth and I can feel the little thing that you push on move.

If I just force the thing off with 2 long bolts what am I gonna break?

the cog is probably rusted up, it should turn freely. It has ears on either side so doubtful you would be able to knock it off. You'd have to take the drum off, take it out of position and get it moving freely. If the teeth arent worn down all the way.

So I won’t be able to get it off with 2 bolts?
