I’ve had this ticking problem for a while now on my Tacoma v6 Prerunner. It only ticks during idle and when I let off the gas. Absolutely no noise when throttling. Also, you only hear the tick (or click?) after about 10 minutes of running the truck, and from then until it is cold again. No change in the way it runs, the truck still runs great. However this noise is absolutely irritating and I cannot find the source. It sounds like it’s coming from the underside of the engine? But I can’t be sure, honestly. I’ve gone a couple of places and haven’t gotten a definitive answer. Before I start throwing money at it I want to see if anyone knows the issue.

I am not positive, but it may be that the flywheel may have a crack in it. Just a thought. Maybe get a mechanic to take a look at that.

Perhaps a crack is opening in the exhaust manifold??

If it is coming from the bottom end, be sure that all torque converter bolts are tight. I have experienced this problem a few times being a Jap car mechanic.
And if its not, its good preventive maintenance.

I had to replace my flywheel due to it having a crack, causing a loud ticking noise...

Could be valve train noise. Mine was doing it when it was cold. It would click a lot and noisy. Mine is a 5spd to handle the problem I switched to synthetic oil and used the Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer. The clicking is almost non existent but can still hear it at idle from time to time but it has been a lot quieter. Not sure If that is the same problem mine happened 8 years ago. Still going strong.
