@crashnburn80 these might be something you're interested in, if you didn't know these already.

Thanks for the tag! I had not yet seen these.

@sidetracked Your images show the SAE D-XL series as available in SAE-J583 fog pattern, however the the item number in the image is for SAE-J581 aux beam pattern (which is a high beam pattern). Looking at Rigid's site, I do not see any of the D-XL series available in SAE-J583. Was this a typo or have they just not been released yet?

It looks like these D-XL series are 4"x4" with 9 LEDs vs the standard pod size of 3"x3" with 4 LEDs.

I'm currently looking at the Rigid Ignite surface mount, I want to install in the rear bumper. Price of other ideas?

    Hi,

Sorry for the delay, been on the road most of last week. I spoke with Rigid today, they said the lights are approved as auxiliary driving lights and are legal for use as fog lights (at least for both the D-XL and SR-M).

    thanks!

Thanks for checking, I asked because of a current SAE LED Fog project I am working on, which includes running all the SAE-J583 fog pods. I was curious if I needed to add this one to my test suite. I already have the Rigid SAE-J583 Fog pods.

Auxiliary driving lights and fog lights are completely different patterns. SAE-J581 is a legal Auxiliary High Beam pattern with no cut offs. While you could put an auxiliary high beam in the fog light location, and legally run it on the street as a high beam with the requirement of no vehicles ahead of you (as you would a high beam), it would not be a substitute for a fog beam (SAE-J583) which has cut offs and can be run with oncoming traffic. An SAE-J581 beam will blind oncoming drivers, it is not compliant for fog use.

I believe the sr-m and dxl have the fog lens on them with the cutoff.

I see diffused lenses, but a diffusion lens does not have a cut off. Otherwise I see different permutations of driving/spot/flood, all of which have no cut off. I'm not trying to grill you on the product details, I was just trying to understand the new product line beam patterns in accordance with what I was putting together.

Oh yeah for sure, I understand. they list the optics as the J583 for the Sr-M and D-XL lights on the website which coincides with what they told me on the phone. Then list J581 as a "feature". Might be worthwhile to give them a call and chat with one of their tech guys for a bit and see if they fit in your project. I dont have a set here, otherwise I'd check the cutoff for you.

    thanks,
    morgan

Found it, thanks! Unsual to list conflicting beam patterns for one product. If anyone else was curious they are here:
