After talking with my mentor, another thing that affects the sound, is the type, quality, and thikness of the exhaust and the tips. A "thinner"tip can give a "raspy" sound, as the walls of the tip can give off a resonance. :)

That old Low Rider that had the turnouts was loud. I went by a cop writing a ticket one day and twisted it as I went by. He did everything but roll over the hood to get out of the way. I was young and dumb and thought it was funny as hell scaring him like that. I did turn off and quickly took a low profile way home. ;)

Exhaust tips actually do play a role in the final sound of an exhaust. Where mufflers and resonators take care of the good majority of exhaust pulse cancellation and silencing, the exhaust tip can shape the remaining pulses and accompanying sound as it makes its final exit from the pipe. Much in the same way a Tuba sounds different than a Trumpet, a short megaphone exhaust tip will sound completely different than a long pencil-shaped exhaust tip. Some exhaust tips even add a small resonator to the equation to help mellow and deepen the exiting exhaust note. A perforated tube surrounded by sound deadening material puts one last mellowing touch on the exhaust pulses before they reach your ears and the ears of others.
........................................I found this on page 2 of your site Chris:D thanks again for finding this! Obviously a LOT of folks here aren't aware of this phenominon:)

Also going along with the slant cut tips, if they are rolled tips with a slant cut I found those to have an even more mellow and a smooth tone... If you get a pop in your exhaust it tends to help smooth it out... IMO

Tip does affect sound from my experience. I found a resonator style tip made the magnaflow on my chevy a LOT deeper and louder than without it on. I thought I was crazy at first, but I took the tip back off and compared and it wasnt just me.

just think of the human voice your voice box is in your throat and your lips and tongue affect the final outcome depending on the shape of your lips and tongue and it can be directly translated to how different shapes and sizes effect your exhaust

I think it does a little bit, my big tip at the end of mine sounds like the deep tone, resinates a little more than it did before i had my tips
