Hi all I am sure that GMC will not get much love here as I have posted something similar and everyone here said go with the yota (maybe its the tacoma world website? :) ) GMC Canyon looks clean no accidents 1 owner with 80k miles and I test drove it...sounds smooth but it was out of state so I have no local mechanics to trust to really look at it. The 2007 Toyota is also very clean no damage to body and interior is nicer than the GMC obviously. Says 2 owners and 2 accidents but accidents appeared to be very minimal. 136k miles which I was told here isnt a lot for this vehicle. There is a small vibration when I rev the engine and my mechanic said its probably the heat shield rattling and the low end blower for the heat/cold makes a small ticking sound that drives me girlfriend nuts which can hopefully be fixed um and now the real issue at hand is the FRAME! MY mechanic picked away little chunks of the frame with his hand and said its rotting out pretty badly and its common for toyotas and their frames for certain years were poor...tires poor but no big deal..dealer i may buy from willing to get me new tires before purchase. We called Toyota and they said there was a recall and the frame would be replaced for nothing but I may be out of a vehicle for possibly up to a month. Aside from the frame rot my mechanic told me nothing wrong with the truck and didnt really give me a straight answer when I asked him if he would buy it for himself if he was in the market(not knowing yet about the recall). Any info on these recalls would be helpful...If i purchase this vehicle can toyota say nah the frames not that awful and turn me down? does the frame need to be broken to nothing? I am on the fence and will be making a purchase by the weekend...would you personally pay 13 grand for a 2007 136k miles tacoma? double cab long bed 4x4 4.0L V6. GMC is 2007 80k miles same deal double cab(crew cab) canyon 4x4 3.7L I5.

Any help appreciated try not to bash too harshly on the GMC even if the GMC maybe isnt as solid it is a touch cheaper at about 11.9 and in my mind taken care of I can get 200k out of the GMC with regular maint.

    Thanks all

Neither one, keep looking for a Tacoma that lived its life in the southwest. The Tacoma maybe, but only if you can get a new frame from Toyota, otherwise its junk with a rotted frame.

I had an 06' Colorado before I bought my 07' Tacoma, so I'm pretty familiar with the pickups you are looking at. I think the Tacoma beats my old Colorado in basically every category. It's more powerful, comfortable, capable, looks better inside/out, more fun to drive, etc. etc. It feels way bigger inside to me too, but I looked up the specs and the differences are only like an inch. It's like Toyota just used the space better than GM did when they designed the things.

I actually really liked my Colorado though, it was a good reliable pickup. The I5 motor is really simple, not a lot of stuff to go wrong with it. The only serious thing I had to replace in the 80k miles I drove it was a water pump and I did it myself no problem. Mine also had the factory limited slip so it got great traction in the snow, dirt, etc. I sold it at 110k miles, but I think it would have done 200k easily. I just think the Tacoma is a better product to be honest, and I wouldn't be afraid of the miles. But that is strictly speaking in terms of a general comparison of Tacoma vs. Colorado/Canyon.

It sounds like the specific Tacoma you are looking at might have some issues though, so that could change things a little bit. I probably wouldn't be buying a truck that for sure is going to need the frame replaced. Why make that your problem? Tell the dealership or current owner to have it done and then you'll buy it, or go find one that isn't already rusted out. It's not like you are getting a screaming deal on the truck because of that. If you absolutely have to buy one of these trucks, then I might be leaning towards the Canyon assuming it's in primo condition.

I'm with river junkie on this one, the frame is rotting, you know you're going to have to replace it. When I was in Egypt (07/08) we drove Canyons there and I will say that we beat the hell out of them. Didn't maintain them the way they should've been maintained, drove them throughout the desert, and we were rough on the insides. No matter how much folks bash GMC I will say one thing about them, they never EVER left me stranded anywhere and we put a ton of miles on them. I would have gotten a Canyon if it felt as comfortable on the inside as the Tacoma does. The inside does feel roomier but I don't think you'd have problems out of the GMC if you take care of it. I had a 94 sierra that was probably the best vehicle I've ever owned if I'm being completely honest, it was just a fantastic and extremely durable ride. The Tacoma's are amazing, I wouldn't buy one with a rotted frame, just my opinion. Good luck either way and IF Toyota is going to replace the frame for sure, and you can deal without having a vehicle for a month, go for it.

I’ve had 2 Colorados, an 07 and a 12, which are the Chevy identical twin of the GMC Canyon.

They are a decent truck, later 4x4 models come with a higher suspension stance (lift) than earlier ones.

While engine power specs may look similar, the biggest annoyance for me was the Colorado 4-spd. Due to only having 4 gears it lacked the low end grunt the Tacoma has off the line and on the highway downshifting to 3rd for passing or hills was very noticeable with reving and drama, compared to the Tacoma’s more subtle downshift to 4th.

The Canyons multi position tailgate is awesome, really wish the Tacoma had that feature, but the bed tie downs are light years ahead in the Tacoma, with 4 adjustable s up top and 4 fixed down below compared to the Canyons 2 on top in the rear and 2 down below on the front. The Canyon has better rear seat leg room, but less comfortable very vertical rear seats, with almost no rear storage compared to the Tacoma with behind and under seat storage spots.

If you plan on modifying your truck at all, there is nearly unlimited options for the Tacoma, the aftermarket for everything is huge. Toyota even has their own performance line (TRD) of modifications for the Tacoma. Colorado has very limited options by comparison and not a lot of aftermarket support.

The Colorado was decent for a family commuter, and did well at hauling 4x6 sheets of plywood. I bought the Colorado as it was a “better deal” since the Tacoma’s hold their resale absurdly well making them more expensive.

I lifted my Colorado 2” and took it off road on an annual multi day off road camping trip. It was aweful. The turning radius was terrible for a short bed. I drug the chassis over rocks my stock Tacoma cleared with ease. The truck was just not developed with off road use in mind. Lots of low hanging parts of the frame. I’m surprised the forward leaf spring mount didn’t get ripped off it hangs down so low compared to Toyota who designs their trucks for off road use and tucks everything up in the frame.

Never had a problem with either Colorado mechanically though.

But! All that said, I wouldn’t buy a rusted out frame Tacoma. While there is a recall, Toyota can elect to just coat the frame so it doesn’t get much worse and not replace it. If you are buying thinking you are getting a frame replacement, that could be very disappointing. If they do replace the frame, there is often additional cost to you for other components that will need to be replaced as well, not covered by the free frame replacement.

Are you crazy, neither of them.

Are you seriously considering an 11 year old GMC truck, that's funny.

Thanks that input was great. I don’t plan on any heavy off-roading honestly. I am more concerned mechanically the vehicle living a life of 200k miles or more if I take care of it. Most extreme thing I would do with the canyon is 4x4 on the beach slow for fishing purposes. Light towing like a pop up camper or maybe smaller camper. Small boat stuff like that. I have property upstate NY so some back dirt roads and stuff nothing my Ford Fusion couldn’t handle so I figure this truck could too. Thanks again

Yes what would be the problem with that? It’s low miles for an older vehicle that from what I am told and seen could last me an additional 8-10 years. The cost of a newer vehicle is higher than I am willing to spend unless you know where I can find a newer reliable vehicle in the 11-13.5k price range
