If that is true there is something wrong with your maintenance light.

At 4,500 miles after the last reset it should flash like 6 times at every startup to let you know you are within 500 miles of needing and oil change.

At 5,000 miles after the last reset it should come on constant to inform you you are overdue for an oil change.

This information is in the owners manual.

Go by the yearly or monthly interval. Shit breaks down over time.

Yes. First one on my tacoma was full of metal and silicon. I wanted to test it right away to get a baseline, and see where it went from there. They explained it was normal for a brand new engine, and should clear up over the next few tests. By the time I did the 3rd test at 20k miles it came back damn near perfect. I use Mobil 1 every 5k, and have only done one more test since the 20k (at 35k) and it looked great.

And for that guy who said that's a waste of $$, I disagree. Why test the boundaries? $35 every few months isn't going to change my retirement date or my tax bracket.

    Same as everybody else...
I change mine every 5k with synthetic and a OEM filter. I sent a sample to Blackstone and they recommend that I go 7500 miles before changing the oil. I'm sticking to every 5k, a complete oil change runs me about 30 bucks. That's cheap insurance for me and I'm alittle OCD about the Taco.

I run 5000 mile intervals with OEM filters and 5w-30 synthetic. The oil is always black when draining.

Oil color is meaningless. 5000 miles is too often with synthetic. Lots of guys changing at 10K with a new filter change at 5K and that is probably conservative. That is how I've been rolling for years.

point I was trying to make is the 3000 interval has been outdated for a loooooong time; people just taking advice from their Dad, which his gave him (in 1960)
