Tankless water heater for outdoor overlanding/camping use?!?

looking to step my game up and pick up a new propane tankless water heater, as their cost is not bad and hot showers are awesome outdoors!
Has anyone owned one or currently owns and loves one of these? I like the look of Mr Heatwr Boss units, but I hear there is a lot of water wasted with almost all of these...waiting for the warmth? I am thinking I can rig up a 12v pump or maybe find a battery operated one that won’t burn out and will last?!?
I also liked the Costway unit that includes a D battery powered pump and all plumping needed.
Open to suggestions, warnings, stories, and love letters!

In for general suggestions on portable water heaters

 

Summit racing has great prices on the Mr Heater BOSS series heaters, that includes everything needed. Just not sure that would fit my needs due to the large amount of water needed due to wastage. Also, I hear the battery powered pumps are weak, so what kind of upgrade is suitable? 12v Seaflow or SureFlow pumps are prevalent for cheap but we need to know what PSI these heaters like, on top of the Gallons per Minute flow needed, and what size plumbing? 3/8 OD or ID or ??

 

Why not just use a gravity fed nuclear fusion powered one?

Its just a simple solar shower If you have a rack up top, a dark rotopack or other water container on it will heat up to over 100 degrees easy- even in cooler climates. When you get to camp, just open the valve and take a hot shower. . I set up a hose and nozzle on one end and it works great. No pics suitable to post though, you really dont want to see it in use!

My boat has a tankless water heater too, we use the solar shower on it too just to save space by not having to carry extra propane, I think that would be a huge benefit in itself for overlanding too.

 

Oh you were being helpful and serious!!! My apologies...I use solar for everything and will continue to use solar to heat up my black scepter..but when I have propane with me anyway and can use it to my advantage, why would I not want to upgrade? Can’t take any of my money with me when I die, so I’m gonna use it to explore the natural world around me. Also, sometimes the fairer sex demands the trappings of comfort that you and I may be able to survive without. Plus, they complain about washing dishes less when their hands don’t get cold!

 

Has anyone used the Zodi setup? Either the double tap or any other model?

 

Oh man, I hear you! I was on a Baja trip one time a long time ago with a old girlfriend that wanted hot water for washing her hair every morning! Ever try that with a white gas Coleman stove?!

Hey- another lame brained idea... wrap a copper pipe around part of the exhast pipe to make a water heat exchanger that runs hot water up to a tank in your bed. I doubt it would get hot enough to make it an on demand one, but it could heat up water in a insulated tank to near boiling when the engine is on.

One could also make or buy one that uses engine coolant, like some 4x4 shops and marine shops sell, and that could be an on demand one while the engine is idling. Here is a kit one that includes a bathroom (porta potties are now required for some places like Canyonlands National Park since so many people are pooping off the main trails there ):

I have the Costway unit and have used it a couple times while hunting.It works well. I just carry a 5 gallon bucket for water. Taking a 2 week camping trip to New Mexico next month and will give it a workout.
