Interesting that not a single person has mentioned what the military has gone to for the most part across the board.

Benelli. Because anything else in the duck blind eventually becomes a single shot.

What is the consensus on 12ga vs 20ga for home defense? I'm thinking of picking up a 20ga Mossberg 500

Not ideal (compared to the 12 gauge) but more effective than a .22 so there’s that....

It has less lead, less powder, and a smaller bore diameter, the only upside to 20 gauge is the lighter recoil but you typically see that in shotguns that are 12 gauge frames with 20 gauge components (the extra weight helps tame recoil) however shotguns made in the last 10 years are typically on gauge specific frames, I.E. they used a lighter frame which makes felt recoil close to that of a 12 gauge, which in my opinion is the only reason to not get 12 gauge.

Depending on where you’re at you may also have to really look for buckshot/slugs in 20 gauge, the most common loads for 20 gauge are 7, 7.5, and 8 shot (bird shot).

If you’re going to get a shotgun that the wife will use or you’re recoil sensitive then I wouldn’t rule out a 20 on a 12 frame, but I (personally) wouldnt go out and buy a 20 gauge just for home defense.

Payload in a 12 ga. is normally 1 1/8 oz. of lead shot. Although I load 7/8 oz. in both the 12 and 16 ga. The standard payload in the 20 is 7/8 oz. Mag 20 will easily handle 1 oz. loads.

Over the years we had Ithaca 37's, Rem 870's, and Mossberg 500's on the ships. I never knew anyone that went for a Mossberg 500 first, they were always the last picked up. Sold mine in 12 ga. to a Brazilian when we did a hot plant turnover to them years ago. I did purchase the Mossberg combo rifled slug\shot bbl. in 20 ga. for my youngest son. It has only seen a little use as a slug gun in shotgun only zones.

I personally don't recommend shooting slugs or buckshot in your home, even for self defense.

I don’t know about up there to BC. It may be an issue crossing over.

Oh I already have one ... 1964 870 Wingmaster Magnum that I put a 14" Rem Police barrel and refinished walnut stock and Limbsaver pad. It's basically the same thing .. no MIM parts, extra polished and hand made.

If he wants a home defense gun, that's your huckleberry right there!

Not legal in the US without a 200 dollar tax stamp and several month wait.

Canada gets all the cool shotguns. IIRC, they got a lever action Circuit Judge several years back.

Mossberg persuder 500, 7+1 12ga. 2 3/4 and 3" shells. A 3" #4 buck is standard load for sheriff out here.if you ever use it, that lil fact will help in court. They can't say your a manic killer with zombie death bullets.cause local p.d. uses same round.
