I am trying to map out and find some cool spots in montana to camp and explore montana, however i cant find much useful info except some atv trails and alot of touristy info, any members here from montana can chime in and maybe share some info, i also dont know much but looking at maps see alot of indian reservation areas, are people allowed to camp on those areas offlimits etc?

any help would greatly be appriciated

Get a Montana gazetteer. It has all of the state, NFS, logging roads on it. Most of our "wheeling" and over landing occur on those. Often they are gated much of the year, some of them permenantly. It's a good way to start though. Once you learn how to read it, you'll find that most of the roads that "go through" are not gated. Most of the gated roads are marked differently that non-gated.

As far as tribal lands go, whitey doesn't get a free pass. Those lands are not open to public camping.

Much of the eastern 2/3 of the state has amazing scenic back ways to get from place to place. The western 1/3 requires a little more route finding. We have a mind blowing amount of logging roads out here. The vast majority terminate on the side of a mountain. I'm still exploring new local routes, and I've been here 15 years.

Whenever we were on our giant road trip couple years ago, when we were in remote MT headed to east glacier, I was amazed at the amount of random roads that led off the highway to places. Just good ol dirt roads that lead to some cool shit

If you end up in my area, around Glacier NP, I'd be happy to tell you about a couple spots.

The Beartooth Mountains are awesome. Google the Morrison Jeep Trail; it starts just outside Clark, WY and ends on the Beartooth Highway between Red Lodge and Cooke City. About 5 miles east of Cooke City you'll find a ton of FS roads, some of which are much rougher than others. The trail to Goose Lake is fantastic.

Lower part of the Morrison, last August (switchbacks were closed due to a fatal ATV wreck)z36460523000_752ece8e66_b.jpg

The end of the trail to Goose Lake, also last August

Check out Daisy/Lulu Pass above Cooke City. A lot of roads to explore and dispersed camping.

If you're around Kalispell/Glacier NP definitely hit up @Pigpen. He pointed me to some fantastic spots last summer.

That's the same area as the trail to Goose Lake. My wife and I need more time exploring up there.
