I'm not sure if there is a thread for this if there is delete this.

Before, during and after a day of adventure/exploration/off-roading what does everyone eat?

The last thing I want to do is "make" a meal. I usually have to tend to the truck for it's needs, wants and repairs/maintenance. My wife/co-driver is on vacation when we go so she doesn't really want to cook/meal plan either.

I'm looking for ideas on meals that's easy, tastes good and will withstand the rigors of off-roading whether is be in the ice chest or food box. Sandwhiches are no good because the bread takes too much space and will be a bag of crumbs after a day, plus it takes too long to make. We did crustable pb&j's but those get old.

If I’m too lazy to cook from scratch I use quality prepared meals - deli counter, Trader Joe’s etc that can be heated easily. Honestly, after sitting in a truck all day rather than hiking or biking, I try to compensate with something healthy. Also fresh fruit. And beer.

More info welcomed. Are you feeding two people or a village lol

Dietary needs / structure is important here. I've seen guys straight up eat canned ravioli cold.

I don't wheel but I have a few hundred miles of hiking under my belt in less than 2 years. Most recently was 40 miles of back country camping and hiking in Yellowstone.

You sort of sacrifice the luxurious meals you might be accustomed to because of space and weight constraints.

I'll assume you are on a weekend adventure

Limited Space: Focus on Calories per ounce.

This would be Nuts, packaged tuna, protein bars .etc

If you have ample storage for food, you're solid.

Lets say you have a standard size ice chest.

    Packaged sausage.

    "Mission Carb Balance Flour Tortillas"

    Packaged Tuna

    Canned Chicken

    Protein bars

Folgers coffee packets or Mio energy

    Water

    Basically, non perishable stuff.

    .etc

    Get creative!

If you think sandwiches take too long to make I don’t have many suggestions for you. You couldn’t even boil water for a cup-o-noodles faster than making a sandwich.........

Supposedly, the bread comes completely undone at the molecular level when wheeling.

Per my previous quote. You give up luxury when in the outdoors... Some more than others. Having the discipline to alot "Food time" and the process of preparing it is a real thing.

This is a huge learning experience that comes naturally as you progress. I've seen newer hikers hump in MRE's and utter shit to eat, months later, they improve their food system based on experience.

I can provide ideas, but ideas are shit without execution.

    Velveets shells n cheese ftw

    Spaghetti n canned sauce

    Steak

    Instant mashed potatoes

Anything you can cook over a fire on a stick which is pretty much anything

Sandwiches with tortillas instead of bread. I call them “wraps” and invented the concept like 5 min ago lol

Refried bean burritos using leftover sandwich wraps

    Put hot sauce on everything

These are cheaper at 99 Cents Only than at Walmart or the supermarket. Sometimes the supermarket has them on sale though.92E02784-EF5B-43D0-9185-AD7235CD1D2C.jpg

I like to premake meals before a trip.

Spanish or Cuban (with black beans) rice, with grilled pork or chicken. Put it into meal sized bags and vacuum seal em then keep em in my ice chest. I like a lot of rice based meals, so I'll do beans and rice with different meats.

I try to keep my breakfasts simple. Dehydrated eggs with bacon or sausage. No oatmeal for me. Makes me shit hard and fast. Wife likes to take pics of me shitting on the side of the trail and put em on IG. So, no oatmeal.

Also, I like tortillas. A metric ton can be kept anywhere and not take up much room, unlike bread. Really tortilla can be used anyway a bread can. Just gotta call it a tostada.

If it's just me, I'm lazy and just eat dehydrated food. Using a jetboil I can boil my water in 2-3 minutes, and when I'm done just throw the bag in my trasharoo. Minimal stuff to pack and minimal clean up. If the wife comes we'll usually have more fun and cook burgers and stuff

I like eating well when I camp, but I hate the cleanup especially if water is scarce.
