I came up with a different way of doing this mod. It's just as simple, however it's more time consuming. But in the end:

Fog lights will work in any Lights On Mode (Parking Lights, Low Beam, High Beam)
Fog lights will work with key on OR off
Nobody will have a clue that you've modded anything

In order to better illustrate this, I've borrowed some pictures from another DIY post on here.

Step 1: Disconnect and remove battery from truck

Step 2: Open the fuse box and remove the 12mm nut holding down the Alternator to Fuse Box wire

Step 3: Disconnect the three white connectors to the right of it. Pull up on the small plastic cover the wires are secured to and it should come out with the wiring attached.

Step 4: Use small screwdrivers (or awls or single strand wiring) to hold open the six tabs (red arrows) that clip the fuse box tray/panel to the fuse box. Use pliers to gently pull up the tray (at blue arrows). It will slide on grooves straight up; don't pull on the tray until the tray clears the grooves or you may damage the thin grooves. I found it easiest to work your way from left to right.
    FuseBox36net.jpg

Step 5: Once you've removed the panel from the box, you need to remove the box from the truck by removing two 10mm bolts and one 10mm nut securing the box to the truck. Also cut the 2 zip ties securing a wire on the underside of the box. You need to rotate the empty box out from under the panel toward the engine to remove it. You need the extra space to get to the wiring underneath.

Once this is done, locate the fog light relay in the fuse box. You'll need this as a reference for the wire you need to find on the underside.
    option2big.jpg

Step 6: Use the open slot to the left of the fog light relay as a reference. You're looking for a Red wire with black stripe. This is the 12V reference wire to close the relay and trigger the lights. The other end comes from a black 12 pin connector above it. This is a power control circuit for the lights. Trace the wire out and separate it from the rest of the wires. You're going to cut it somewhere in the middle and we're going to supply a new 12V reference to the relay. Tape the end from the power control circuit up and put it back in with the rest of the wiring.

Step 8: Your new 12V reference is going to come from the driver's side marker light power wire. The Green wire is the power feed, the white with black stripe is the ground. Get yourself some green 16-20 gauge wire. Run a length through the wire loom coming off the front driver's corner of the fuse panel to the breakout section for all the different lighting wires.
    20180413_174259.jpg

Step 9: Run it into the loom for the marker light and use a tap splice to connect the wires together. This is fine because we don't need to pass current, we only need a 12V reference for the relay.
    20180413_174827.jpg

Step 10: Connect the other end of your newly run green wire to the end of the Red with Black stripe wire you left exposed from the before using the same tap splice method or whatever method you prefer. Tape up both tap splices to protect them, and voila!

Your marker light is now the 12V reference for your fog light relay. The only disadvantage this mod has to the original is that you can't turn the fog lights on with all the lights off, but you now can use them with the key off which I think is better. Also, should you ever have to take your truck to the dealer and they have to look at the fuse panel, they will never know about your mod. And, if you should want to use it someday, you now have a 12V reference with headlights on laying in your fuse panel ready to be used for a roof light bar or nerf bar lights in the future.

Reassembly is the reverse of these steps. Enjoy!

I tried this on my 14 taco today and it did not work. Fog lights function as normal but will not turn on with high beams or without low beams. Anyone think they can help figure out why? Here is a pic of the mod

Seems like people with 12-15 have the issue of this mod not working.

Fun stuff... did this mod on my 2014 Taco and it didn't work. Now I'm getting a CEL and traction off light so I got the codes read and learned it's a P0416 for the Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve B Circuit Open. The relay with a bent prong in the instructions were for Air Injection so wondering if I fucked that up. I removed the splice and bent the prong back to reinsert it, but I've still got the CEL and Traction off light. The truck is also at 13.4V as opposed to 13.9V.

Would love any guidance on this... I also cleaned and oiled my TRD air filter with the K&N kit and think I may have used too much oil, but since the prong on the relay was bent and the code says Air Injection, I'm inclined to think it's something there.

Definitely a little late to the party with this thread. Does anyone by chance have experience doing this mod on an 01-04 taco? I just don’t know how different it would be to a second gen.
