Not a gaming enthusiast, where do you get time to play? Haha My rig, home office, multimedia servers for local storage and streaming from a NAS. Running Linux Debian, not a Windows fan except for the unevitable. GPUs reingeneered for blockchains!! #itsec

Getting a new build started. My oldest son is old enough now to need something better than the off-the-shelf i3 that we got for him. That computer will go to my youngest son when (if) he finishes school this year (with high marks). My current build will go to my oldest son, and this will be my new build. Ordered the main parts last night.

I went a little lower on the MOBO and only picked up a single stick of RAM, but I wanted the i7-8700K, so had to skimp a bit elsewhere. Very soon I'll add three more sticks of RAM and get it up to 32 GB. I've read good things about the Cryorig, so went with it for a mild overclock over the EVO 212 that is in my current build.

That's the first batch of parts. Once those arrive I'll put in the order for the second batch.

I wanted the 1080, and would have gone with the 1080 over the 1070, but I'm also trying to have enough money left over for a new full plate SOS steel front bumper. The GTX 1070 will replace my current GTX 970.

This where I skimped the hardest. I wanted a nice window case, but honestly. I've used the HAF cases in my last two builds and my wife's current build, and they simply keep things cool. Air flow is terrific. But no window and no front USB 3... Oh, well.

For storage I have an existing Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB SSD to pair with an existing Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB SSD (and two other SSDs for Steam games), and a 1 TB spinner that is currently pretty full with family pictures and stuff. The new MOBO supports M.2, but I did not include one in the build as another cost cutting measure. I'll very likely get one pretty soon to serve as the OS drive, though. Then the 1 TB EVO will serve as storage for Steam games and I'll add a 6 TB spinner for backups.

Nice you can pass the rigs down to the kids!

GPU prices piss me off so much....... :frusty: The price of the 1070 you are looking to get ($549.89) is the same price that I almost bought a 1080 for right before Christmas but I wanted to wait for MicroCenter giftcards from Christmas and then when I got them GPU prices skyrocketed

Ram has gone nutty now to. I paid just over $100 for a stick of 8 gb ram for my wife’s PC and I wanted to upgrade my HEDT to 128 GB of 3200 MHz ram except the cost has doubled!

I heard there might be dedicated mining GPUs in the future, then gaming cards should drop in price.

That's because most manufactures are focused on producing for mobile devices. Last RAM upgrade for me was 32GB for $100. Several months after I bought it, it doubled in price.

    Edit: 5 years later, it's $240

Just finished rebuilding my first rig. Built it in college for basic workstation and it was bottlenecking with some gaming.

Decided to rebuild it with the goal of being sub $1k. Works good for what I need. I'm sure I'll build more in the future.

I sure hope so. But unless they make the gaming cards purposefully horrible at compute, the miners will scoop up whatever is cheapest.

The mining cards will be cheaper since they will come with no video output and the memory in them will be significantly faster from what is rumored.

Yeah, I have built about 5 of them, all as gaming machines, but I reckon I won't build anymore because I can no longer buy the physical CD/DVD game and must rely on electronic downloads, which I can't do with a download cap of 12 gigabytes a month by my satellite provider. As a result, I went to XBOX One, and I'm loving it. How did I ever stand playing games on a 23 inch monitor when I can now enjoy them on a 40 inch Sony hand me down when we got the new 55 inch Sony? There was only one problem at first, the steep learning curve, learning how to use a controller. I previously only played via keyboard and mouse.

I almost went with a refrigerant cooler, but worried about whether the system would keep my chipset cooled. I went to a 160 mm air cooler, and everything is happy.
