No through holes for adding a grease zerk to the factory U-Joint.
Loosening the shaft again to correct my misalignment on the splined shaft on rack turned out to be easy since I had it off just yesterday.
Hears a photo of it installed

Actually, I don't think so. I believe they used to be made by a company headquartered in VT and had plants in the US, Mexico and Brazil.

Was that something normally replaced during the frame swap ? Or did they charge you for it ? How much ?

I bought the new shaft and they charged me 15 to install during the frame swap. Not normally replaced as part of the frame swap. The timing just worked out.

Just finished replacing the Ujoint on my truck. It eliminated most of the play I had at the steering wheel and the binding is gone now. Well worth the 3 hours and 20 bucks spent.

Just did mine on Saturday, nothing easy about it, lots of rust etc. , didn't want to come apart but brute force and pig ignorance prevailed yet again!
I did smear the caps with red loctite just to be on the safe side, I 'm sure it will last longer than the oem setup, as it has a grease fitting.
The autopsy revealed only one of the cups had failed badly; full of rust and nastiness. I expected worse as it nearly locked up on me once or twice.
The bad news is that it revealed how wobbly the upper shaft was when I was putting it back together! I'll be looking into that one too...:annoyed:

    Steering is tons smoother though.

Around three hours all in I'm guessing. Couldn't really get a straight shot at moving them off the splines as they were pretty rusty and needed some persuasion. Actually installing the new u joint was pretty easy in comparison.

I did the zip tie mod on the upper shaft, two zip ties in there to take up all the slack.
I've had Tacoma pickups for many years but this steering shaft business is a real disappointment, they should have a recall on this stuff. My steering really bound up a few times before I started soaking it down with oil . I could see a real liability issue with an inexperienced driver. Just my .02 worth...

Update: after driving the truck for a few days, pretty much all of the vibration and play is gone from the steering. I have been chasing what I thought was wheel imbalance for years. The left wheel bearing replacement finally eliminated most of it, then the steering shaft project took care of the rest. There is still some random clunkiness somewhere but so far so good, it has 160,000 miles on it so I'm happy for now.

It doesn't hurt to use a center punch and stake the bearing caps into place. That and using a dremel to remove the burs was all I needed to do to rebuild mine.
