I have used it a few times since that’s the only way to hook it. I never thought there would be a problem since the rope is heavy :facepalm:I’m glad nothing bad happened. Would using the rope shackle be better?

Problem isn't the rope, the ball itself isn't made for that and may break off and become a missile. Stick something like this in your receiver:

The reason it's bad is because that tow ball isn't meant to see that much rearward force, so there's a very good chance it shears and gets launched. I would get the hitch recovery point like linked in this thread and use a soft shackle with it.

in a pinch can just put it in the receiver and put the pin through the rope. I've done it with a strap before. Its just as safe as having a receiver shackle but can be a bitch at times and not always good for the strap. But when no other option...better than a hitch ball.

@eon_blue yeah im definitely not using a towwww tow strap. I have a recovery strap and snatch strap depending on my level of ‘up shit creek-ness’. No missiles for me. I definitely dont go ballz deep off road with the level of my build so far, but im not gunna go into the bush completely unprepared. I think as I gain more experience ill upgrade accordingly. Gotta start somewhere and know ur limits

super helpful thread all... thanks. Some context, then two more questions.

I'm not really offroading - sadly more of a mall crawler. That said, friends ended up in ditches this winter due to snow conditions, and I thought having a tow strap setup would be a nice addition now that I own my first truck. From that kit I purchased, sounds like most are OK with the rear hitch mount setup. My questions are:

    1. for my uses per above, is that recovery strap ok, especially when used with the back hitch? Or is the concern more about pulling out of areas like ditches, vs. just ordinary towing on pavement.
    2. the BPF product looks like it connects to the exact same place as the existing recovery point - isn't that connected to the frame already? is the selling feature here thicker metal and stronger bolts?

Sorry if these are idiot questions... appreciate the help.

    1. The concern is more so the type of pull you need to do depending how stuck they are. Tow straps are great for towing along a disabled car on asphalt, as the name implies. The problem arises when someone is stuck, and they need a slight (or hard) tug to get them free. With a tow strap that isn’t a good idea because there’s no stretch. That energy gets transferred to both vehicle in a really harsh manner, and that’s how stuff breaks. If you’re just lightly pulling someone in a little snow then a tow strap works fine, but a snatch strap would also work just fine in that scenario.

    2. The benefit is more bolt points (3 vs 2), thicker steel, and the ability to connect a standard sized shackle to the front of the truck.

Lemme know if you have any other questions.

No, unfortunately not! Your best bet is to either just use the tow strap anyways (but understand it’s proper use and limitations) or to shell out another $60 and buy that arb orange strap linked at the bottom of the page

Definitely pick-up some of those M12 bolts 10.9 Grade. I ordered 8 of them from a local Bolt shop and only cost like 10$ :boink:

bought that exact kit...have already recovered multiple people and myself using it...setup on a curt class III hitch....they locking pin has some surface rust on it as I left it on over the winter but the strap is great, and the shackles are nice too...the block that fits into the hitch is super beefy...only "weak point" would be the pin but it seems solid and has served me well!
