Haha, you don't need fancy gear. Just properly tied knots, some stinky bait, and you got the booze part down already.

I'll let you know. I'm out in NC untill later this week.

    Need some help here -

Never been to the OBX, and looking to go on vacation the week or two AFTER Labor Day...We have two dogs and will have a small child (will be nearly 1 y/o in Sept.) in tow.

I tend to try and stay away from crowds, we just want to relax and be able to go to drive on the beach setup a spot for the day and relax with the kid and dogs. Although we still need to be "close" to activities, restuarants, etc..

We were thinking somewhere between Nags Head and Corolla - but also need to keep it under $150/night, which seems doable via VRBO.

Any ideas or suggestions for a rookie? We'd like to make it a yearly thing if we can find the right area to stay in.

If you don't like crowds, keep heading south and skip NagsHead. The villages of Waves, Rodanthe, and Salvo and south into Avon and then Buxton are some of my favorite places to go.

Plus, you get more room to drive on the beach down there. A 10 day ORV pass is $50, or you can buy the annual for $120 (I think?).

X2 on further south. The point can get crowded with fishing, but there are plenty of areas to get away from crowds.

I was hoping that going after Labor Day would reduce the amount of traffic and crowds, no?

Also, I should also mention that I don't fish or care for it really.

The point is awesome for driving around and camping out for the day. Also some cool trails down around Hatteras village that duck and weave through the dunes. Definitely spend time driving down all the Sandy trails behind the dunes.

There is a Food Lion in Avon, and then plenty of eateries and mom&pop shops to visit on a rainy day.

Also, Ocracoke is a really cool place to day trip. Its about an hour ferry ride from Hatteras Village.

Another vote here for heading South on the OBX. You have easier access to the sound side down there. On the sound side there is plenty of places to play in the water with out the waves. The 1 y/o will appreciate it.

Big Changes this year for the drive-on beach north of corolla.
In addition to the requirement of a parking permit:
    Summary:
    For 05/25/2018 - 09/03/2018

All vehicles with a curb weight less than 5,000 lbs (All Tacomas) must have a tire pressure of 20 psi or less.

From 0900 to 1700: Driving along the shoreline is Prohibited. Driving is only permitted at the base of the dunes.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Additional Beach Driving Ordinances:
    Sec. 10-66. -
Motor vehicle tire pressure. No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle on the beach strand or foreshore with tires containing air pressure exceeding the following pounds per square inch (p.s.i.): (1) Twenty p.s.i. for motor vehicles with curb weight of less than 5,000 pounds. (2) Tire p.s.i. not greater than that required for safe travel for motor vehicles with curb weight greater than 5,000 pounds.

    Sec. 10-62.
Blocking Foreshore Drive Lane Shift to Dune Line from 9 AM and 5 PM, the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Driving at the dune line is required during this period beginning 1.5 miles north of the North Beach Access ramp to MP 17.
“No vehicle shall travel in the area extending one and one-half miles north of the north beach access ramp to Mile Post 17 in a north or south direction between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from the Friday before Memorial Day to Labor Day except in an area bounded on the west by the toe of the dune line and extending eastward to the middle of the beach strand.”

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been eagerly awaiting these changes for years. These changes will make the beach experience 100 times better!

It's about time. Last year I pulled out a Ram Power Wagon buried just past the entrance at Carolla. The guy was amazed that his front and rear lockers didn't keep him from getting stuck. I asked what PSI he was running, he said 80 and refused help airing down . He just wanted to get pulled out and go back to the pavement. From now on, I am not offering to pull anyone unless they have already aired down.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I'm with the others on going into Frisco or Buxton. Check www.homeaway.com . You can find a nice house to rent in your price range.

There's a grocery store in Buxton, several great restaurants up and down the island (Orange Blossom has some great breakfast sammiches), and you have access to many ramps to get on the beach. Don't forget the equipment you will need for driving on the beach (shovel, jack, piece of plywood, etc.)

Wonder how many new signs they will put up for the duneside driving. Sucks it starts so far up the beach, we normally not park that far up so we are not parked on top of others. Really hope they in force the 20psi rule. It saves the beaches and keeps them from getting rutted up

The Dune driving rule starts at 1.5 mile marker because people are not allowed to stop and park until after the 1.5 mm.

Is Cape Lookout really everything it seems? Un-reservable beach space, first come first server, off road driving allowed(with rules of course) and primitive camping??

We're headed to Frisco towards the end of July. We plan on getting the 10day OHV permit and drive the beach and do some fishing. Anything else we should look at while down there? This will be my first time in that area.

Cape Hatteras light house, Ocracoke light house/village (have to go on an hour ferry ride to get there, but it’s a beautiful/different kind of place). Grave yard of the Atlantic museum in Hatteras village, I’ve never been but heard it’s worth checking out. Just drive around, lots of interesting places, especially for someone new to the area. Once you get into Buxton (village north of frisco), it feels like a different area. Watch your speed though, the cops don’t tolerate speeders well in the summer months with all the traffic and people.
