Frame Replacement Approved: Now I have some questions

Today I had my truck inspected and the frame failed. So, I have a few questions as I start to think about the replacement and parts I should have replaced at the same time as the frame.

I have a 2007 TRD Sport Double Cab. For those of you who have had their frames replaced on the TRD sport double cab what all was replaced besides the frame? Toyota couldn't tell me today. They said they would know more once the frame replacement kit came in. Each truck is different evidently.

I'd like to make a list of parts to replace. The dealership said they would charge me about half labor rate to replace non-frame recall related parts.

They did a full inspection of the suspension and drivetrain. The only parts they recommended that I replace would be the shocks and struts/coilovers.

I should mention the truck only has 120K on it.

I was wondering if Toyota replaces the hitch as part of their frame replacement? Mine looks like hell, just curious if I should plan to order a new one, or if one comes with the replacement?

They do not replace the hitch. I'd def reccomend new front shocks/springs since you will get new lower control arms up front and an alignment as well. I got new rear shocks for free since mine broke off during the replacement.

New frame includes lower control arms, new hard brake lines except the rubber lines going to the rearend and calipers (should replace), new hard fuel lines. I was told by the dealer that if they have to remove it and I buy new they will replace for free.

Meaning if they have to take it off and I supply new they bolt the new on without charge.

Have you checked to see if your in line for the leaf spring TSB?

 

I got new rear shocks from the dealership when they broke mine during the frame change too. I thought I was the only one lol.

 

Just had mine done and they did not replace hitch, but they did put new shocks on (which I supplied) at no charge

 

I did have the leafspings replaced about a year ago. My hitch looks horrible. I hate to have to buy a new class 4 hitch. Might have to check and see if someone is selling one.

I was able to buy a hitch from the classifieds here. Came from a guy in AZ. Cost was $200 shipped using Fastenal. Check the bumper support too. I supplied a box full of stuff that I got installed free including the hitch.

Does anyone know how many leafs are in this new leaf springs? 3 or 4 ?

I’m in the same place, approved and now waiting on the frame to come in. I’m wondering, if the springs were replaced once already will toyota not replace them again? Mine were replaced with the recall of the 3 leaf ones back in 15 or 16, forget when exactly.

 

Are the 4 leaf packs any good ?
I currently have a set from wheeler's and my dealer wants to install the toyota springs when it's time for the frame swap.

 

4 leaf packs work fine for my needs

 

See if you can get them to just leave the new springs in the bed of the truck after they swap your wheelers springs to the new frame. There are actually two different 4 leaf packs available. When they did my frame they put in the new regular 4 leaf pack. I dropped it off a week later to have the heavy duty 4 leaf pack from the TSB for harsh ride and hitting bump stops while towing installed. Still not the greatest leaf pack but better than stock. I’ve added air bags to accommodate towing now and it’s all good.

 

Right now I have a Wheelers 2”AAL installed . Thinking about going with the 3 leaf progressive from Wheelers because when towing my camper it is a little nose high . The progressive will drop me down a half inch anyway !

 

Too me that looks like the back of the truck is already low. Can you get a hitch with more drop so your trailer is level?

 

It’s a weight distribution hitch with anti sway bar setup by the place I bought the camper . The hitch has 3 dif settings where it’s bolted together and it’s on the lowest setting now. They also mounted the receiver to my truck .There is also a bunch of firewood and gear in the bed !

 

If I go with a new springs that give me more than 2” of lift my camper will really be nose high . Maybe I need to look into a different hitch ?

 

Just googled it . I need a shank with a drop or more than 3 adjustment holes .
