2009 taco 2.7 head gasket & timing question

    I'm almost ready to pull the head on this lil motor. I'm a bit perplexed by the timing. this is my first vvti setup so I think I'm just being too careful but better than blowing it up on reassembly. I have the crank at TDC and I can see the #1 cylinder valves are closed. I think I understand the timing marks on the vvti assembly but I'm having trouble finding the purpose for the colored links on the chain. I'm also not sure how to "read" the position of the vvti assembly........when I bolt it back up do I need to reposition that thing or does the oil pressure take care of that? I'm assuming those colored links only really matter on install but shouldn't they line up before I take it all apart? anyone have a link to a pdf manual, or schematic for the timing chains?........im going to need torque specs too but I haven't started looking for those yet.

    2009 taco 4x4 5 spd 2.7 200,000 miles
    ran fine but would overheat when driven
    found bubbles in the radiator
    cyl 3 had 90 psi compression, all others 140-150

    You can also make some of your own timing marks with a little punch and hammer. Mark the top of the camshaft near the front bearing caps. That way, no matter how the sprockets come off/go back on you know the cams are in the same spot

    Thanks Jimmy that looks like a wealth of information! At first the intake cam didn't look lined up but I sort've rocked the crank pulley back and forth a bit and got it to align.......must be slop in the chain? I was nervous that the colored links weren't aligning with anything and then when the cam didn't look right I really started thinking. I've got a few bolts left in the front cover and then it's off. I'm going to wait until I have a timing set and head gasket set in the garage with me before I proceed with yanking the cams and head. Thanks again for the info. For 200000 miles I'm impressed i haven't snapped a bolt off yet
