Well, right after I bought my base '96 std cab, I added a used ARE cap with a sliding rear window.
I'd like to replace my Tacoma's original fixed rear glass with a slider.
I've found some online, including a CRL brand for $164, including shipping, but no gasket.
    Any opinions welcome here.
Another brand I found, listed a slider for a '96 standard-cab DLX and SR5, but not the Base Tacoma.
Is there a difference between the DLX and base rear windows, or something related I need to watch out for before I order a slider?
    Thanks in advance.

Rear windows will all be the same size 95-04. 95-00 had a 4 piece slider, 01-04 had a 3 piece slider.

The one I'm interested in is a four-piece. Just wondered why one seller would list the same slider for DLX and SR5, but NOT the BASE model. Thought maybe there might be some issue with interior trim on those that isn't on mine.
Any opinion on the CLR brand? It's supposed to be a new unit, with metal latches. Does $164, including shipping sound OK? If Tacomas weren't so lean in the yards, I'd try and find a used one.

Mark, where are you located? I have access to a 2003 (3-piece) factory OEM sliding back window with gasket that's for sale.

I'm in Northern Virginia, just outside DC.

The irony of all this is, in late 1990 I bought an '87 Isuzu pickup - an LS model which was pretty loaded, including the slider window. Then I installed an aluminum cap that someone gave me - but it had a fixed front glass!

$164 doesent sound too bad to me. Though if it doesent come with a gasket that might be a pain. I am not sure what used ones are going for either.

Will a sliding window fit right in place of a fixed window on these 1st gens? Cause that has been something I have thought about doing.

As long as you have the correct gasket they're interchangeable. I've replaced my sliding rear window with a fixed one on two different 1st gens.

Ok so the outer edge gasket is not interchangeable then? Did you buy new or used? How much did it cost you? Are they glued into the cab?

I bought the gasket new from Toyota, and the glass from a windshield replacement guy I've used many times. The glass was new from one of the three main OEM suppliers (Saint-Gobain, Pilkington, PPG). The gasket was ~$50 and the glass was ~$200

I keep toolboxes and emergency stuff near my tailgate with a 2"x 6" retained by pockets in the bed-liner.
It's a pain climbing over or pulling out stuff to crawl all the way in to reach items that have slid up to the front of the bed. So a slider would be nice.
Just curious why you twice replaced your sliders with fixed glass?

Mostly because I prefer the looks of the fixed rear glass, but also for better security. Plus, I've never once opened the rear glass on any of my trucks that had them.

As loaded as my Isuzu LS pickup was, like my base Tacoma, it didn't come with AC. The slider provided a powerful flow-through vent system with the windows open. Installing AC and the fixed-window cap ended the need for extra ventilation, and made the slider more secure. But then I used to camp/sleep in the truck-bed and it would've been nice to reach inside the cab for food, beverages or whatever, instead of having to drag everything inside the cap with me.
