So I'm starting a dedicated thread after seeing a couple of people curious if the FJ TRD Bilstein PTR13-35140 kit would fit on the Tacoma. I bought myself a kit and will be trying out the kit on my Tacoma. So I guess my truck will be everyone's guinea pig. Been reading the Toyota-4Runner thread, link below, on this kit and it might work with the Tacoma. 20180417_214436.jpg

    First Update 05/01/2018

First thing I noticed on this kit that isn't the same as the Tacoma TRD kit would be the rear shocks. The hose to reservoir on the Tacoma kit is on the side of it. But the FJ kit hose is on the side of the reservoir. So gotta run out the buy one of the Bilstein reservoir clamps...

    Last Update

After some feedback on this thread, Im going to call this kit a bust. I will now be attempting to put this kit together and will be selling it to a 4runner or FJ owner.

Thank you all for the feed back. Sold the kit to a 5th Gen 4runner owner, kit is off to a better home.

What was your price?? Like $600?? No lift tho...

I found a thread about these.. that's a great deal.

    600# springs ... isn't that a little soft?

FJ curb wt is 4000#s .. Taco with DC and 4x4 is 4450+#s

So preload is a thing. Might not be a cushy ride.

Kit looks good tho... I think 1" lift in the front rear nothing.. get AALs and you have your lift!

Well you can get a set of springs they are cheap enough if you need to.

I went with 885s and my Sport rides like an OR now without the roll.

    G/L with the install.

The FJ 6112s and Tacoma Pro 6112s have different lower coil perch locations. The FJ is ~8” center lower shock eye to bottom of coil perch....Tacoma Pro is ~9 3/4” (at the lower clip setting). So looks like the Tacoma 6112 has ~1.75” more preload on the 3x14” 600 lb coil. I posted #470....still have my bud’s Tacoma Pro kit sitting in my garage. He just got his wheelers AALs so we’re going to install ASAP.

It looks like that rear reservoir is smaller than the kit that was for the Taco. I don't have a good photo of mine but the FJ one looks to be about half the size.

Those that are installing the fj kit on 5th gen 4runners are claiming they work great. I don’t see any problem with at least the fronts (6112s) working on a Tacoma. There have been many threads discussing suspension swaps on FJ/T4R/Tacos...

On your FJ kit, You could preload the coil with a wheelers 3/4” rubber isolator and a toytec Pro preload spacer (designed for the Pro/Baja 6112s) . Using both of these spacers may preload the coil similar to where the Pro Tacoma kit 6112 is preloaded. The toytec spacer is kind of expensive though ~$140....so, the wheelers isolator (~$30)combined with a top plate spacer may also work well......

You could adjust needed height with a 1/4-1/2” (actual thickness) top plate spacer. ***If you do wheel your truck hard (fast Offroad fully cycling/bottoming suspension) , you may want to cycle the suspension (no coils) with the top plate spacer installed to make sure the bump stops are contacting before the shock bottoms out. You’ll probably be fine with a 1/2” (actual thickness) top plate spacer or smaller.

As far as the fj kit rear 5160s....the resi does look smaller compared to the pro taco kit (10”) resi ....not quite sure on the shock grommet sizes (thickness and bolt size) though. You could also use a piggy back mount for the resies.

This kit’s price is awesome. Too good to pass up if you can get it to work to your satisfaction.... there’s been a bunch of diccusion on the T4r.org thread and quite a few installs on 4runners. The actual shock bodies look identical except for the lower perch location. The coils are both 600 lb 3x14” coils. The Tacoma is just preloaded more.

Thanks for the write up! And adding everything up sounds like it would cost the same as a bilstein 6112/5160 combo

Still wonder if a machinist could machine a new circlip groove into the shock body so one could preload the coil more (just as the adj 6112s do) ?

I just called Bilstein and they said the mounting locations are different for the rear shocks on the FJ so the rear socks wouldn't work on my 3rd Gen.

Damn I guess this a bust after reading feedback on this thread. Gotta sell the kit now to a 4runner or FJ owner now. If anyone is interested, ill be putting this up for $600.

    Whole lotta stuff
You could just sell the rears if they don't have the correct collapsed and extended length you need for your mounts. Honestly I like that the fronts are preloaded less, allows you more room for adjustment via spring.
