To replace gear oil or not to replace gear oil

I bought a 2013 TRD sport in September with 55k miles. To my knowledge the rear and transfer case haven’t been done. Should I do it right away or should I wait till my next oil change at 69k miles oh yeah. I haven’t done it before but there can’t be much to it. If I get the dealership to do it it cost $260. Why is it so much? Is it really that involved. Let me know what you think? What gear oil should I use? I know I should make sure the full plugs come out before I attempt to drain.

 

It's easy... Just remember to make sure the fill plug gets loosened first. You don't want to drain it without being able to refill it..

 

It's super simple. I doubt it has ever been changed so you might want to go ahead but I doubt you will damage anything if you just leave it until you get around to it. Do it yourself though.

 

Is there a recommended gear oil?

$28 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90. I think I got 8 qt's to do the rear diff, transfer case and front. Had .5 of a quart left over.

 

Search is your friend. There’s tons of info to be had on here including a thorough DIY tutorial. You can do all 3 diffs yourself for under $100 in less than two hours time.

 

If you can make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich you can change the gear oil. And if that oil hasn’t ever been changed I doubt the spark plugs haven’t either. I just bought a 2010 with 76000 miles and first thing I did was change gear oil and spark plugs. Both haven’t been touched since factory. I use Mobil 1 gear oil.

Some mention above, but if I bought a used anything with 55K, I'd change all fluids, filters, spark plugs; inspect brakes, etc. Forget any records that came with it especially if they were from a dealer. You'd be surprised how much maint. work is never actually performed.

Al the maintenance was done at the dealer. That worries me now. Hmm time to do some work.

 

Go big or go home!!! That makes me feel better that I haven't changed mine since the 40000 mile service and I'm just about to hit 65k.

 

Its on my to do list to work on. After I tint my windows and install my new headlights and brows at fog lights lol

 

Most folks will tell ya to replace the plugs with regular copper plugs. I replace mine with Densos but some prefer NGK both are available for cheap on Amazon. There's a really good write up on the technical chat forum about this.

What brand of PB and brand of J?

Weight? Chunky, smooth or organic PB?

Jelly or preserves? Fruit type? Grape, strawberry, apricot, etc.

What about the premixed PBJ bottles? Are they ok to use?

Bread for base of sammy? Both for durability and spread-ability.

Temp that the PB should be at to avoid tearing the bread during spreading?
