I installed the parts except the leafs on my truck yesterday. So far I haven't been able to significantly hear it anymore. I think I can slightly hear it under certain circumstances. I'd say 90% improvement, I think it was well worth the cost.

Awesome! What was your howl like before the fix?

My parts are currently sitting 1.5hrs away from me in the Gorge yet are not supposed to deliver until Tuesday...:annoyed: lol

Update 5/9/18: Installed the new dynamic dampers and stoppers last night. Waiting to get sound deadener and foam before installing pad pillar #5. Howl has been reduced some, but still can be heard. I posted more in depth in the other howl thread, but wanted to add a quick update in here, too.

Update 5/21/18: Pad pillar foam installed along with egg crate foam and 80mil sound deadener. Howl is much more quiet now that the sound deadener is in there. Took some work and $$$, but it was worth it!

Anyone here experiencing howling/whining sound on a 2018 TRD OR double cab 4WD? Only 20 miles on the odometer when I first heard the whining noise on the rear of the truck, it happens between 50 to 60 mph but very noticeable at 53 mph. Did not really think much of it until now.

Welcome to TW and sorry to hear about the whining. Yes, many have this issue. Check with your dealer and try to get them to perform the TSB. Best of luck.

Amazing if they are not putting updated parts out the door on the 2018s.

This was one of the factors that lead me to trade my truck in.

    A subaru outback.

Excited to see what comes out of the midsize market with the new ranger, frontier, and even the bronco(I know it's not a truck but still!)

I took my truck in to have this fixed and they couldn't replicate it. I call BS since it happens all of the time. I'm sure they took one look at the skids and said 'fuck that shit'.

Figured I'd chime in, 18 double cab OR package. Noticed the noise around 50-60mph on and off gas. Truck has 1k miles on it. Probably didn't turn the radio down for the first 800 miles. You'd think they would have been putting these parts in the 18s by now. Been driving toys since mid 90s, this is kind of disappointing.

Well its not a putting in the parts issues but a harmonic resonance so no parts were incorrectly installed. Perhaps some more R&D time would have been nice. Go get the TSB done or ignore it since it's been found to cause no harm.

TSB is for only 2016-2017. Unless he has a really really good dealer he will have to buy them himself. Thats what I did and it helped out some, but its still there. I heard it more than usual yesterday. It was also about 95 out so maybe the heat had something to do with it.

Going to the dealer and calling corp will get the TSB date coverage extended to 2018.

Not for me. 3 trips to dealer. One with an engineer who confirmed the howl is the same as what the TSB covers. Many phone calls (hours) and emails to both corporate and Jim Lentz’s office. I actually just emailed them again last week pushing them some more.

Edit: Ah he has an off-road so maybe they will extend it for him. Not sure I have heard of a single 2018 getting the TSB yet though.

I'll leave this here for people to hear the noise, if you're not sure what it sounds like.

I've only been driving the truck 2-3 days a week due to carpooling with my wife, but boy oh boy did my commute today drive me mad from this noise.

After playing phone tag with Diaema from the Toyota executive offices for a week I was able to chat with her today. She talked to the direct team (apparently) that has been dealing with the rear howl TSB. Some technical team of some sort or other. Anyways, they told her they are not working on a TSB for the rest of the Tacoma’s not currently covered. She actually said they told her a TSB for the rest will most likely never happen.

So it sounds like access cabs and non TRD guys will just have the purchase the TSB parts like I did and install yourself. I’ve been grinding corporate and the office for months with no progress. Guess it is what it is.

That’s not right and I’d encourage everyone to keep burning up the phones and email.

I agree it’s not, but at this point I’ve exhausted all my options. I’ve sent lots of emails, made tons of phone calls to corporate and the executive office, and been to the dealer 5-6 times in the past 7-8 months. If all 2019’s start coming with the TSB parts then I’ll raise some more hell at that time.

I do believe the more that complain the better. I wonder if there is some thresholds of complaints they hav to hit before anything is done ha
