(Am I the only one who does not truly understand this open / closed loop stuff? I have googled it, read about it, and it still seems over my head. Maybe I found too informative websites...but I was, and still am lost)

    Simple explanation.

Closed Loop = ECU is looking at the data from the O2 sensors and using that data to modify timing and fuel maps on the fly.
Open Loop = ECU doesn't care about the O2 sensors and runs a predefined timing and fuel map that is meant to be safe when @ WOT.

This is my basic understanding of the two.

More simplified = Closed loop means there is feedback. Open loop means no feedback.

And open loop has some set parameters to put it in open loop. As I was told it it usually a combination of things.

    Over 3500 rpm
    High load on the engine
    Over 3/4 throttle

    Am I correct there?

Also, that is great to know that the Ucon makes the truck run in closed loop at all times. That pretty much seals the deal. My new must have mod for the truck. And I am going to take the lid off of my AFE intake and see if that will help a touch.

thanks guys for all the open/closed loop explanations, I will say those were actually understandable haha.

and I assume that this relates to my UG, when I have the circle in the top right hand corner and "open circle" vs "closed circle." IIRC, when I mash on the gas, the circle opens (which would make sense for open loop) and the other 99% of the time when I am just driving to/from work, the circle is closed....so the ECU is reading real time data and making adjustments as needed.

If the UCON makes the truck run in closed loop all the time, why would my UG ever show "open loop" in the top corner?

(honest question, not any sort of call out to be proven right/wrong). Do you think thats part of the UCON trickery on the OEM ECU at play a little?

    parts and stuff

im guessing that the ECU is actually in open loop but the ucon never is. the ucon feeds the ECU what it needs to be happy. the UG is reading from the ODBII port which is tied to the ECU and sees the ECU in Open Loop. atleast thats my understanding of it

UCON works by feeding false info to the stock ECU. This way the ECU still thinks its running the show.

Its kinda like being married :D

Anything is comparable if you modify it to work. Out of the box, no. Mounts are in different place, no swirl effect to alleviate bubbles, etc. Could you modify it slightly to work? Sure! It's close to working for our application, just not plug and play.

Do you remember plugging in all those connectors from the UCON to the ECU? Not being mean here, giving you to details.
    20170701_170218.jpg
The UCON plugs into the factory ecu, then the factory harness plugs into the UCON. So factory signals HAVE to pass through the UCON before being sent to the factory ecu. The UCON simultaneously controls ALL engine parameters, and sends false "happy" signals to the factory ecu so it doesnt know it's being f%^&*ed with.
Your Ultragauge is connected to the obd2 port and that is fed by the factory ecu. Since the factory ecu is being fed false "happy" signals from the UCON, you are seeing the false happy signals, not the true signals the UCON is commanding.
    Make sense?

P.S. The UCON is always in closed loop, therefore it is always CONTROLLING afr from idle to redline.

Yes, as of an hour ago. Time consuming project but I knew that ahead of time.
Got to meet and hang out with the legend that is @loginfailed for the weekend. Had no time to relax and chill but I think he is pretty damn happy with the results!
For @loginfailed the purpose of this project was to change the annoying buzzy sound inherent to an unequal length exhaust system but the performance benefits are huge when you complement the equal length headers with a properly tuned length y-pipe. This effectively makes the header a 6 into 2 into 1 system (he already had the URD equal length headers, URD Y-pipe and mark III exhaust, plus two Vibrant ultraquiet 1142 resonators).
We made the y-pipe equal length, eliminated one resonator and added 1 high flow 3" cat. Preliminary report is very positive. I'll let him review when he gets more mileage on it.

Great to get to finally meet and hang with the great @Roostfactor over the weekend. The man smokes a mean brisket! We basically spent a full two days working on the y-pipe starting early in the morning and working late into the night. Can’t thank you enough, John!

Special thanks to Mrs. Roosfactor for letting me stay over on Saturday night since the truck wasn’t drivable and allowing me to pretty much hold John hostage in the garage for 48 hours. Super sweet lady.

I did about two hours of sleepy highway driving last night and it is SO MUCH QUIETER than before. Looking forward to driving it a bit more in different conditions to see how it sounds and performs.

I also had the opportunity to observe and practice TIG welding for the first time. I can’t stop thinking about how useful and fun it would be to have my own TIG. :D
