Damn!!! That's actually pretty SWEET!!! :goingcrazy::eek::thumbsup::fistbump: Thank you sir!!!

I just might eventually buy it or something similar if not that one? I would also like to get the BTECH Mini UV-25X2. I haven't done much with my truck regarding radios for well over 2yrs now and I am now getting back into "upgrading" antenna mounting brackets or making an antenna mount bracket. Either way, keeping options open.

Btw, when I was doing my Swansea-Cerro Gordo trip, I was up pretty damn high up in the mountains and I was able to TX/RX to Keller Peak... believe it or not, but I had to turn UP my power on my 2m 1900R just to "hit" the repeater. I can tell you that it was definitely "distant" for sure, if you know what I mean.:oops:

If you do some googling and youtubing, 20+ watts on the AM side is easy from that radio with just a few tweaks..

    thats pretty awesome!

HAHAHAHAHA, I was just thinking about something similar... Youtube for example.:fistbump::laughing::laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl:

That really is a pretty neat option to have though!!!

Btw, regarding Keller Peak, yeah, I was pretty stoked about that. :D:p:thumbsup: HAHAHAHAHA, for shi*s and giggles, I tried the same with my Baofeng UV-5RA on "HIGH" and no such luck!!! :ballchain::laughing::laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl: It was actually an experiment that I wanted to do while I was up there that I had thought about before I even did the trip. In other words, I was wondering if I could hit that far of a repeater with my setup?

Anyways, yeah, pretty stoked about that one.

@MonkeyProof one of these days I hope to meet and wheel with you. Although, I don't wheel "fast" and the hardest types of trails I'm willing to tackle are "medium/moderate" type trails. According to my off-road Cali book, Swansea is considered "moderate", which, in my experiences, is about right. Just one section that scared the living FU** outta me due to "icy" conditions and a F'N HIDEOUS WIND GUST while on a fairly good angled slope that just eventually fell off into an abyss!!!:goingcrazy: Too busy shi**ing my pants to give a FU** in taking any pictures. I was trying not to get killed that day at that moment!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA :laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Anyways, it would be pretty cool to talk shop for sure!!!:fistbump:

to the OP, sorry if I am :threadjacked: your thread???!!!

    Now, :stayontopic: :laughing::laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl:

What about "Trail Leader" or "Trip Leaders" ? That is that it's getting difficult to have a run with multiple vehicles and to have all vehicles on same communication source. Thoughts on the Leaders requiring one or the other? I have Ham and CB in my vehicle. It's hard using both on trips. I'm old ;) and can't remember who or what vehicle is on which. I think we need to standardize and Ham is the best in my opinion.

I don't know what you're arguing. That's exactly what I said, you can't use just any radio on GMRS or otherwise but a radio that holds a Part 90 or Part 95 acceptance (as in actually tested and submitted to the FCC) retains that acceptance even if you use for amateur radio, just as long as you don't physically modify the radio. You can modify a radio to work on ham (such as is sometimes necessary for repeaters), but once you do open it then it loses it's original type acceptance and can then only be used for ham.

IOW, if you want to do GMRS, you buy a GMRS radio. If that radio is by some unlikely chance frequency nimble and can also transmit within the ham bands you can also use it for that since there is no FCC testing or approval for ham radios. You can use any radio you want to transmit on the hams bands as long as it meet the spectral purity and bandwidth necessary to stay on our allocation.

This is typical of Part 90 radios. I have several surplus radios that came from businesses and school districts. They are designed by Motorola to transmit from 136 to 174 MHz or 403 to 470 MHz. You see that covers a lot of users, they are just building a radio that will do it and they trust the licensee knows what he's doing with respect to the rules.

I had already found my own answer. See above. Had all the same info you share, didn't feel a need to share since "no" seemed to suffice myself :)
So the radio isn't certifried but it's used often (seen here), has great reviews for what it is, and is affordable to the commoner.

Chris doesn't know squat, like me, unless he's been reading up on his own unbeknownst to me, possible. We're wheeling buddies and friends in person, we're allowed to give each other shit and ribbing. You looked into that way too deep, sir.

I understand the legal ramifications. But it also sounds like this: "Don't use the wrong channel and you won't get your pee pee slapped"
Some don't need to invest into yet another hobby. This is simply a better means to an end for trail comms. Sometimes CB falls short, literally, and won't reach people in the thick Appalachian woods when someone arrives later than the group. We have to head out toward pavement and get cell service or CB reception. Sucks to do that.

I was inside Stripped Butte Valley(Death Valley) and was sending and receiving packets to a station in Good Springs, NV. with just a 5watt handheld connected to a roof antenna. not to shabby.

Apologies to the ones I offended by posting that. I try to keep people out of trouble when they buy those; because far to many people who do buy them are unaware of the penalties if they go on the wrong frequencies, even by accident.
The FCC and local agencies have no mercy, even if you do it accidentally.
I did three years of volunteer work with REACT back when; and over half our members were working police officers, for local police agencies.
This did happen accidentally from time to time, sometimes deliberately; in either case the users got hammered, in the deliberately they went to jail. The manufacturers don't give a damn, I do.

Not being condescending or sarcastic; apologies again to anyone I offended.

I'm in no way butthurt, myself. I just plan to shy away from the wrong freqs. Have a radio in mind that won't pick up those freqs, that's at the same price point as the BF-F8HP?

You can disable the transmit on specific frequencies using the CHIRP software if you are worried about it. This is how NOAA weather is set on mine. Duplex off means no transmit on that saved channel.

My bad brotha!!! I was just saying. I used to work at a place that handled quite a few different models/generations of Motorola radios myself. The CDM's, for example, were "quirky", but easy to program them. I even had to deal with super old Spectra radios using MSDOS!!! Also, I can tell you, from my personal experiences that MACOM/HARRIS are REALLY NICE LOOKING RADIOS, but the programming, in my humble opinion, is worse than Motorola's programming interface. Just my opinion.

Anyways, this is going to be a very nice thread.

That is pretty damn sweet!!!:fistbump:

HAHAHAHA, I've been working on this "radio box" forevvvvvvvvvvver and plan on FINALLY completing it here very soon!!! I was out of a job for quite a while until very recently and finally being able to do things again... sorta!!! Anyways, here's what it looks like right now. It's supposed to be my SHTF field setup. The plan is to have internal batteries and only short burst emergency type transmissions to conserve battery. The HAM is my Yaesu FT-8900R and the CB is a COBRA 18 WX ST II. I wanted to make a 5-band box. I might take out the CB and put in a SSB CB radio instead??? So, I have "regular CB" and then SSB as well.

Btw, pay no attention to how short the CB antenna is. I only "use" a short one there so I don't have to worry about the dumb car port. I have it there ONLY as a "safety plug" so that the radio has some thing on the antenna port. It's tuned, but in the very HIGH 2's. Again, it's just there until I actually do any off-roading and then I change it out to my Francis Hot Rod 4ft whip.
