Finally pulled the trigger and got a winch. Just waited for the best deal on this winch and just bit the bullet

I understand how to install the winch, and how to spoil the rope and all.

My question is I have seen people running a “winch switch” in the cab. Is this for power? Or for them to be able to operate the winch from inside the cab? I never fully understood why I always seen winch switches in the cab. But being able to operate in and out from the drivers seat would be nice, which this unit has a wireless remote, so if that’s what people are doing I wouldn’t need to run a switch in the cab.

    Just wondering
    Thanks TW!

I have the same winch sitting on the floor waiting for my bumper to arrive in a few days. This will be my first winch install, so subbed for details.

I'll be adding a winch mount to my bumper this weekend. If things go well I'll be adding a 12k Badlands.

I have the same winch mounted in an SSO Slimline on my 17. I just went with the factory wiring and fabbed a bracket and remote mounted the control box to my upper radiator support. Pop the hood hit the switch and winch away.

I have the same winch, but used a Warn power interrupt kit. Otherwise, the winch is always getting power. So something gets damaged, or something interferes with the wireless signal the winch could start operating. So the warn kit, uses a solenoid and a switch between the winch and the battery. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CQFVN8

I'm in the market for the exact winch you just bought. Were'd you get it and what did you pay?

I got mine through Ebates/4wd parts.

4wd parts had a deal where it was free shipping and they paid tax on Smittybilt products. It was $571. But they had a 15 or 20% off code, plus Ebates had 15% cashback on top of $10 off my first purchase with Ebates.

THEN there’s a $50 mail in rebate for this winch as well. So after all of this and my rebate, the winch will cost me around $383

Thank you! Best deal I found was $515 off eBay. I'm on 4wdparts right now and if I can put together the deal you got, I'm buying one now.

Check With AutoAnything, in this thread, I got mine for less than that including shipping, but it depends if they can price match it lower at another site.

I got mine on Ebay for $467 shipped to my door. Ebay has a tone of 10-15% off coupons right now, original listing was $517 minus the $50 off for the coupon.

I just said fuck it and went for it. I paid $517 from eBay. I work in IT and had $200 worth of reclaimed stuff from clients I applied from eBay/PayPal. That was my discount. I'll see if I can apply the $50 rebate from Smittybilt, but not counting on it.

I yanked a $80k six series BMW from a ditch today, on a rainy mountain road above the Napa Valley with a tow strap and wish I had the winch, only so I could play around. And wouldn't you know they didn't even tip me. Fuck 'em! A bunch of well dressed punk asses going to Bottle Rock or a wedding.

I haul some serious ass on mountain roads in my CAR when it's DRY. I have no idea what these punks were thinking in the rain on an unfamiliar beat-to-shit road with potholes everywhere.

Well good to see a Tacoma owner helping out. And your first tip on what you should have thought they were doing, was they’re all dressed up and driving a Beamer. Prep kids who have no idea

I have no problem helping out a fellow off-roader stuck in the woods for free, but in this situation I tell em $50 up front. $50 now or $300 later for a wrecker.:)

I’m confused about what you’re saying. The X20 has a toggle switch in the side to interrupt power when not in use.

That winch has a wireless remote so you should be able to use it from inside the cab with doing anything additional.

I installed a blue sea switch close to the battery to disrupt power to the winch

Adding a secondary manual switch within reach of the winch is a good idea, far safer than a override in the cab. What if its your hand or someones clothing or hair stuck while the winch is spooling? Are you going to try to get to the cab to turn it off?

This is also why wood chippers should have kill switches within reach of the blades.

Why would any of that even be close to the spool while winching? Just saying. Even when spooling cable back on the control should be in your hand, right?

Because people with lost fingers sometimes do dumb things? It has happened. If you are trying to unstick spooled cable with a tool or by hand, its far safer to disconnect the battery, or at least with a manual kill switch.

Another more likely problem one may encounter is being able to stop unintentional winding if a hand control switch fails, or theres radio interference with the remote, and if there is ever a short circuit in the relay, solenoid, motor or cables.

Mine is OFF unless I’m using the winch. That way there isn’t live power wires up front in case of accident. Also I have heard of winches that fail to stop spooling
