Awesome write up. I was a bit confused when looking at the steps but it was clear as I started tearing everything apart. Thanks!

Great mod! Completed in under 30 minutes. I have all LED dome lights and this works perfectly in a 2012 DBL Cab.

I've had this thread bookmarked for a good while, and just stopped other things today and said 'today is the day'.

I had already installed LEDs in the dome & map from @MedlinAround, actually a little over 2 years ago. :anonymous:

So here are some quick notes that may help others. I think it made a pretty clean install. Sorry no pics, but you'll understand I think..........

    1) as everyone says, releasing the wires in the map light to do a position swap is the toughest part overall. I used a dental pick, worked ok.

    2) I did not bend over the prong that needs to be fed from the dome. Instead I used about 16ga copper strand wire, stripped about 1/2", and fed it into the open slot on the plug, the one that goes over the prong in question. It fit fairly snug, but you can pull it out if you tug on it. So I just used a small zip tie to secure the new wire to the existing wires. No strain on the wire now, and it's snug enough to retain good contact.

I did have to rotate my LEDs to get them to relight. It must be that the wire swap creates the polarity change for those sockets.

    3) on the dome end I used a small brass machine screw through the hole, head on the bulb side. On the backside I secured it with a brass nut. On the new wire I crimped a ring fitting, placed that over the screw against the mounting nut, then ran another nut to hold that secure.

Everything works as advertized. Both on when doors open, both 'dim out' during auto shut off. Both light when you flip the dome switch to 'door', both stay off in the 'off' position. And with the doors closed and switch in the 'door' position the map lights still work individually when pressed.

Thanks for those who went before on this mod.

Now for some small lights on either side of the console, down by the floor........

Question for those of you who have completed this mod. Can the map lights just turn on when the door is opened without the dome coming on. I want to
Do this mod but only have the map lights come on instead of the dome light. But I still want to have the option of turning the dome light on when needed. I know this way kinda defeats the purpose of this mod but I’m wondering if it’s possible. Thanks

Isn't there a switch on the dome light to have it off? Not sure if that would cut off power to the map lights with this mod though.

Yeah I think it does. Iv been reading multiple threads and it seems like if you turn of the dome with the switch the maps turn off too.

I just tested it and if you turn the dome light off the map lights turn off too.

Thanks for checking for me. I don’t have a lot of experience with electrical work and I might have miss it in this thread as well as others I have read But what color/type of wire do you use to connect the map lights to the dome light?

Iv also read that if you connect the wire that connects from the map light to the middle blue wire on the dome light plug, the dome light might be able to turn off with the map light coming on with the door only.

How did you connect the wire did you solder it to the unused tab in the map lights and then connect it to the hole on the dome light with a screw?

I did it just like the OP. You can use any kind of wire, 18 gauge is more than sufficient. I put a crimp on bullet connector in the middle of the wire so I could remove the panel completely in the future if needed. Just a small screw from HD to attach to the dome light.

I know this thread is old but do you know what exactly to get from radio shack that will fit in map light connector. I’m talking about the molex pin. Unless you still have some extra molex pins hanging about haha.
