Here we will have another prerunner to 4x4 conversion. I have a 2005 Tacoma prerunner with 126,000 miles. I will be using a manual hub kit from 05Taco4x4. I have completed 2 first gen prerunner conversions, 1 taco clip on a 1998 4runner, and a 4.7 v8 swapped dc first gen. I have collected most of the parts, but have not started yet. Here is the truck. Here is the outboard cv kit that I got from 05Taco4x4. DSC00984.jpg There were a few pieces I did not expect to get, but I am really happy that I did.
Here is the 2nd gen cv Im going to use.
DSC00985.jpg The cv is reman from Detroit axle. I could have gotten a set from the local wreaking yard, but they were rusting up.

Are you going to use the front diff out of an all wheel drive FJ?

I may later down the road. I left that door open. I got the t case and front diff from a 2007 fj cruiser with 97,000 miles. I wanted to play with the add a little. I could always sell the add actuator. They seem to go for a bit. I got the add front diff for near the cost of the actuator. Welding up and plating the add tube is an option.

If you weld the add tube, steering is going to be hard when in 2wd

My front diff in permanently engaged and the steering is not different. When in 4wd there is a noticeable difference.

Not much progress today, sidetracked off the project. I am done messing around with a 12 ton press without the correct press plates. The first gen I am steeling the hub and lockouts from, will be getting auto locking hubs from a 06 tundra I have laying around. I will put the steer knuckles together before pulling them from the truck. I have the original steer knuckles from the donner taco, that were removed the first time I did a prerunner conversion. This will allow for the donner taco to remain a roller. Here are the 06 tundra steer knuckles and a quick pic of the lockouts.DSC01001.jpg DSC01004.jpg Things are going slug slow right now! arrrrrhhhhhhh!!!!

No difference. It’s still an open differential.

Last Friday I pressed out the hubs from the 06 tundra. I put them in the 99 steer knuckles without abs. They are ready to install. It seems I like to go the long way around, LOL. Now that they are ready to install, I am working on putting the 99 back together. Since the auto locking hubs use the outboard cv joint to hold the bearing together, I have been installing the diff and trans. Its all in now I just have to work on building the cv's. I do not want to pull the steer knuckles twice. Here is the other thread, This 99 taco again!!! I also just got the hub seals for the 05. So the hubs are what I am waiting on to put the bearing assembly's together.

I guess I got board. I worked on the 99 taco that needed a cab. I also changed it from auto to a 5 speed. And now I have been building a 1989 toyota 4runner. I am putting a 4.7 v8 from a sequoia in it. When I get it done, I will try to finish this conversion.

I wish I had that much time. Maybe when the kids get older.

Its been a bit of time. I put all the parts on the shelf. The 89 v8 conversion is in moving condition.

There is a more to work on to finish. It sure is fun to drive. My dad and I went for a ride and he asked me if the front tire came off the ground when I punched it, LOL!

Who knows if I will get to the 05 4x4 conversion. I did pick up a 05 4runner with the 4.7 vvti that also is 2x4. I have been thinking v8 and 4x4 could be fun.
