XM Antenna relocation

Hello all,

I have a 2012 DC TRD and my rooftop tent is blocking my XM reception. Is it possible to disconnect the shark fin and add a magnetic antenna to the hood? I want to keep my stock radio as it works perfectly fine. Thanks for any and all assistance!

Pretty sure you just have to run an aftermarket xm antenna to the factory xm module. Just unplug the OEM antenna and plug in the aftermarket antenna.

 

Thanks Purpleman for your response. Do you know where the XM module is located? I thought perhaps the XM module was built into the radio itself and required a special connection perhaps.....

 

If xm is built into the radio, you'll just have to run the aftermarket xm antenna straight to the back of the oem radio. I'll try to pull my radio out tomorrow and I'll let you know what to do.

 

Hey thanks Purpleman but you really don't have to pull your Taco apart on my account! Car Toys had said that the XM is built into the radio and they couldn't add an external antenna but then again they may have been trying to sell me a new unit. The stealership said that the XM module was next to the kick panel on the driver's side....I can't find it.....so I guess behind the radio is the last possible spot. I'll pull it later and see if I can find it. Thanks again!

This extension and an xm antenna should be all you need. Plug the extension into the back of the radio and the antenna into the other end of extension. The xm antennas plug is to fat to fit into the opening behind the radio/module, this extension should fit.

I'll try to remember to check fitment between the extension and radio at work tomorrow.

 

I just plugged the extension into the male side of an idatalink sat/nav retention harness(male side replicates what the oem sat or nav antenna plugs into) and it fit perfectly.

There's a image somewhere on this site or google an image of the back of the radio that points out which plug is for sat radio.

I would just plug the extension and antenna into the radio and test it before you start running any of it.
