I just bought my Tacoma and as it's my daily driver I don't intend or foresee any major off-roading (mudding, rock crawling, etc). I would like to keep some basic recover gear in the truck though for what-ifs. Would these items be sufficient for some light to moderate recovery needs? Thinking of a hitch shackle mount too. Any recommendations for a decent one? Thanks!

Look at the bottom of the page in the products discussed section. That's pretty much it along with a few of these http://www.smittybiltdepot.com/Smit...wPy1uylRJxnerBpYXG4BLSnTie_r8zixoCrkIQAvD_BwE
The only place to really attach it is the rear hitch on a stock truck. You can also just use a trailer pin for the hitch.

You can always just use a hitch pin instead of buying the hitch shackle mount.

True, but if he's not planning to offroad alot he could save the cash for a mod he would get more use out of. I need to buy a few hitch pins for spares actually. I've almost left my d ring shackle in someone's else's vehicle a few times now. I'd rather lose a pin, than a 25 dollar shackle mount .

Hmm. Off roading or not it seems pretty basic—for the last 30+ years I have always had a logging chain, come along, and a compressor behind the front seat. A shovel seems a good idea, along with traction boards.

Good choice, I got the same one with 30' of cable. Very stout. Will also make a good back up for my winch when I get it. Now if only my front recovery bar would come in.

I just swung by a rigging place and wanted to pick me up some Crosby shackles figuring they were the best that money can buy and the guy told me that Van Beest made in Sweden are far superior than Crosby shackles. They were cheaper also @ $14.00 a piece.

For those that don't know, when using a shackle, tighten all the way, then unscrew 1/2 turn. Otherwise, when you put full tension on it, you'll have a bitch of a time undoing it without pliers.

I haven't seen the two most important recovery tools mentioned. Patients and thought.

    Knowledge is #1 to me.

sure, you bought a truck, but do you know how to drive it so you wont need recovery gear?

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Tire deflation device, air compressor, tire repair kit, shovel, traction boards. An air jack is usable on any vehicle, unlike the high lift, which has it’s place. If you want to go further, then add a power puller or grip hoist and necessary rigging. Without going on to a winch and traveling solo, that’s about the limitation of things that will help.

I wonder what makes them better. Better materials? Better process?

better "hipster" attitude toward the lesser known product?

I'm not sure if they are any better than Crosby's but they are a well known and well regarded company in the rigging world.

If you're using a high lift to winch with, use a chain, if you're using a truck to get you out, use a strap. Always have a shovel to dig out of the easy stucks, a light truck like the Tacoma will be able to use the above mentioned hand winch to get out of a lot of situations. Dig, hand winch, dig, hand winch, Did that for ever in the Tacoma when I had it.
