Hey Bravisimo - if you have a Prerunner, there won't be a front diff or transfer case. Because you are 2wd. Front diff is engaged (via transfer case) when you switch into 4wd.

thanks man. I didn't know. It make more sense now. So my only concerns should be oil, brake, steering, windshield washer fluid, coolant and rear diff correct? (in regards to changing / replacing.)

60 pages of reading hurts my eyes.. Toyota parts counter guy gives me """uhhhh uhhh" answers and the service guys are to busy to pick up the phone. I don't want to ask auto zone because they don't care....... but I need to do my truck at 62k and don't know much about prior service on this vehicle. But im having a hard time picking oil to use.

I understand 75w - 90 and 3 quarts should take care of TC and Front Diff, but is it ok to run synthetic?

I have a LSD differential rear and doing straight conventional and LSD additive, I was going to buy 6 quarts of the same, but if I can run synthetic in my driveline somewhere I will be happy.

Ignore the weights in the photo. 75w90 is fine for everything, but yes you’ll be good with 6qt.
I’d change the gaskets too, they’re cheap.

Awesome where did you find that page?

How often do we need to change front diff and tc oil? I know rear diff is 30k just wasnt sure if it was the same

Work lol. We do them all every 30k.
Since your dealerships parts guy was giving you uhhhh for answers, I’ll save you the hassle for the gaskets:

    12157-10010 x3
    90430-A0003 x2
    90430-24003 x1

    I have them memorized *sigh*

I changed all 3 diffs last weekend. This is the fourth time for this truck, have 176,000 miles on the clock. Once again the dumb ass front plugs gave me trouble...because of the STUPID DESIGN Allen bolt!

Had to take to my buddy’s shop, he welded a 19mm nut onto the stripped drain plug and it came right off...

Did All three of mine as well at 36k. Only thing I thought was a little odd was that my front diff oil was dirtier than the rear diff and transfer case. Is that normal? Anyone else have this? I barely use the 4WD

    boy howdy!
just did both diffs and the xfer case in about 1.5 hours. thanks guys, those were soooooo helpful!
quite messy cuz i got a cheap pump and it leaked all over the place, but i had put down an old cardboard box so no problem. that was really great. i have about 60K miles and all the oil looked almost brand new, so i guess i'll have to drive a bit harder :)
    cheers!

Changed all 3 today at 84,500 miles. The front looked like chocolate milk. The other 2 looked brand new. I hardly put my truck in 4x4 unless to lube the system. Why did the front diff look so bad? Thanks for the responses.

Probably sucked some water in the breather port.

But isn’t the breather port for the front diff higher up in the engine bay? I had the same thing happen to me as well, transfer and rear diff clean. Front diff dirty and I rarely use 4x4

I thought the same thing too. I thought the rear breather was lower and that's why people did the rear breather mod.

Just did this and greased all the zerks. I used 80w90 in everything since I could buy it by the gallon. I live in HI so in never goes below 0 degrees. Hopefully it 80w doesnt mess anything up....

Just use the gear oil with it already in it and don't worry about it. It won't hurt to have it even if you do not need it which you likely don't.

It would be nice to find something definitive in writing. My Haynes manual does not mention the limited slip supplemental fluid. C'mon Haynes!!!

diff.jpg diff.jpg here is a pic of my diff. The door jamb says A04A, which I think means open (i.e. non-slip). So, I think the a$$ at O'Reillys misinformed me about the limited slip supplemental liquid and I don't need it...
