how do you guys secure things they don’t reach the cleats and or wouldn’t make sense to use d rings? For example what’s best way to secure one or two boards sticking over tailgate or something small in the middle of the bed?

Tie down(s) using the existing mounting points.

Small items, I’ve added D rings 1/2 way up the bed (using the bolts that hold in the rear cubby’s).

I keep short bungees in one of the cubbies for things like that.

If tying down board ends that protude past the tailgate or are on it when open, in addition to the D-rings in the bed, you can tie down from bumper frame to the other side over the open tailgate. Learn to use a trucker’s hitch or get ratchet straps so you can cinch down your load. At a mentor white water guide trainer used to say to me; “rig it for a flip”.

upload_2018-6-5_21-39-49.jpg I don’t have a 3rd Gen, but I added “L-Track” to the bed of my truck. We use it in the aerospace industry for tying down cargo. The fittings can be moved wherever you need them.

I did the same thing. I didn’t do the track the whole length of the bed, just a couple sections where it was likely to be needed. Ordered from US cargo control. If you get the right L track it fits in between the bed ribs. Someone’s build thread has some good info on it.

Bed mat like the above ^^^ keeps most heavy stuff in place. Boards hanging out = bungee chords and tie down to d-rings and/or to bed rail rings. Also I have a OEM Tonneau cover - with wood I just lay the back 1/3 of the cover on the wood sticking out. Can drive highway speeds with np. Milk crate bungee to tie downs for small stuff.

I'd go that route if the bed bolts weren't tapering. Two seat track crowns at the bed bolt locations would have been killer. The track fittings are very inexpensive also.
